Are there different gear ratios in the transmission for the v6 performance pack with 3.31 gears, compared to base v6 with 2.73 gears? My wife is trying to decide if she wants the 3.31 in her base mustang. Can she drive one with the performance pack and get an idea of what it would feel like?
I believe the transmission is the same, but the rear diff gears are different (2.73 vs 3.31) Definitely go drive both the base and the premium to feel the difference.
2.73's for better gas mileage.
3.31 for better performance.
I drove both and ended up buying a 13' base w/ performance package 3.31's (wanted a 13 or 14 because there were a lot of standard options on the base the 11-12's don't have). In my opinion the 3.31's is what all the cars should have come with from factory.
I still averaged 29 mpg (hwy)/ 24 (city) and the car didn't feel like it was lugging around town like it did with 2.73's.
Now I will say this the performance package is a stiff ride with the performance package springs. I actually got a slightly softer ride after lowering with SR lowering springs. Which was fine because I got the look I wanted and a little bit better ride.

I asked the same question at the dealer yesterday when I went to quote a gear swap. Tranny is the same. Different programming is all.
I can tell you from experience, the 2.73's are a dog and gutless once in 6th gear. So any accelerating at 65 or faster requires a long distance or downshifts. In the city it's similar. The car goes into as high a gear as possible and you have to kick down a gear just to move through at times. This can make it seem as though your punching it around in city traffic.
Im saying best for performance and gas mileage. Sure 3.73/4.10 would be the "best" for performance, but your fuel economy will suffer. I'm able to get 30 mpg and great performance. Hell, when I was bone stock I could chirp 2nd EASY and even get a chirp going into 3rd.
I'm running 91 hybrid tune and 3:73 gears and setting cruise control for 70 mph, I'm getting 28 mpg. Granted its not 30 mpg but what a world of difference when stomping on it with 3:73 compared to 3:31 gears. Lol.
The 3:73 gears are absolutely amazing. From a off line wot to punching it at 50 mph the car hits that power band faster and really rocks. The best mod next to the performance tuner. If one has 2:73 your really missing the boat on what our v6 can do and fun factor from an acceleration stand point. I'm not a track racing person but I love that feeling when on an on ramp doing 30 mph and punch it to merge into traffic. Awesome awesome awesome. I'm not having any traction issues on a dry surface with tire spinning when wot from a dead stop and I have factory 17 inch Michelin tires.
The performance package is a good deal if you really like and want 19 inch tires. I think it also comes with an extra sway bar and Strut tower brace besides the 3:31 gears.
I hear ya on that but since when did the 2010 4.0 come with 3:31 gears. The 4.0s the v6 model and no way 3:31 gears and a tune on a 210 HP v6 made up 95 HP difference and 40 torque difference, which is what the stock 3.7 v6 has.
Our stock 2.73 gears are horrible. The performance package is a good deal if you like the 19 inch wheel and tires. I personally would not be happy with the 3:31 gearing and pay an additional 600 dollars to install 3:73 gears. This is on top of the already 2500k performance package. I would rather not get the PP, take the 2900k, put it into my own power enhancement, suspension mods and leave the factory 17 inch Michelin tires.
PP adds the wheels (lightest 19" oem wheels ford makes), coil springs, upgraded sway bars, LCA's, strut tower brace, LSD 3.31 gears. Missing anything?
Sport mode setting on the traction control button. Hold brake and two quick taps. (different then the sport shift mode on the gear selector).
Looks like everything. They say "pp" but other than the gear upgrade I think they should have called it "handling package" When I think performance I think of go fast now, when I think of suspension upgrades I think handling. Yes it will corner better but it would maybe be on par with some of the imports. We will always have that live wild Axel.
