Got a 3D Printer - Got Parts Ideas?

Hey guys,

I don't know if you know but I'm a 3D Designer by trade. I got on the bandwagon for 3D Printers (https://www.makerbot.com/) and got one.

Midway doing random fun stuff I thought it would be cool to do stuff for the Stangz!

Have you any ideas where/what would be cool to do?

The prints are actually very smooth and can be sanded/painted to OEM colors etc. (DETAILS!)

Have you got any cool ideas for pieces that I can design and print?

We could have a MustangEvolution line of billet pieces!!

Alright guys, some update.

I'm going on a parts run on a few wreckers here in town. In total they have the following:

'88, '94, '99, '01 and a '95 vert. They don't know if they're base or not; I guess I'll find out when I get there.

What parts should I be looking out for? Let's make a list.

So far I've got:

Door Panels,
Instrument Cluster,
Any other interior panel that I can find,
Maybe grills,
Centercaps?,
Any other ideas?

I may be alone in this thinking, but a lot of the parts people are asking for (99-04 anyway) are already being mass produced from injection molded plastic. I can't see how individually 3d printing pieces is going to be cheaper.

That being said, I would love some replacement door handle cups for my 04 that don't cost $70 each lol.
And an insert that would make the rear cup holder functional.

3d printing is generally cheaper than injection molded products (emphasizing the generally).

Being 1 person instead of a company that has to sustain an employment base of over 20+ allows me to have a greater margin at lower prices (so it's cheaper for you guys).

Also me being one guy, allows a wide range of customizations. I've already talked to an upholstery/vinyl shop here and were ready to go for body color (or other) vinyls for the door panels (front and back) as an example.

I've also talked to a body paint shop who've given me the green-light for painting said products (not just door panels).

So...I see there is value here, hopefully it'll be validated soon after my trip tomorrow.

I know you guys have been waiting a while strictly on my say, so I totally understand concerns.

Hopefully I prove myself very soon and we can get some really great looking parts going ;)

Alright!

I bought over $200 worth of parts at multiple wreckers and I'm not even done yet!

They're going to ship them to my place by Monday or Tuesday the latest so I'll post pictures when I do.

I got door panels, rear panels, radiator cover, those fake side-air-intake things, knobs, instrument cluster cover and the cover that goes on the radio/AC etc.

Lots to do!

Sweeeet! Are you planning on doing custom editing to the OEM parts, or just making replica OEM parts? For example, the fake side vents, you could split them in the middle, making two fake side vent things of half the size that attach just like the OEM ones.

More pictures are attached.

Can someone please let me know if the panels can come off the door panels as seen in the pictures attached? (I think the last two).

I'm talking about the part that came covered with vinyl for some models and just hard plastic with others.

Does that come off semi-easily? Gas Automotive exterior Vehicle

Final Posting

So just a last message to cover this whole day up.

Everything you see here, I can replicate, color however/wherever as long as its reasonable.

I've talked to lots of paint shops around here and we've got some things going on but it seems like it'll add to the cost quite a bit.

Would you guys rather receive the part unpainted (which would be black) or would you rather have the option?

Also, as usual, I'd love some ideas from you guys to see what you think we can do with these parts.

OH ALSO!

I've got door panels from 2 different cars and rear interior side panels from 2 different cars.

I'll pics in a bit.

The vinyl doesn't remove as far as I know. They end up looking like **** and bubbling up over time. So if you print the vinyl piece as plastic instead, I don't think too many would complain. Haha

Our research department has a number of 3D printers, one of which can print titanium. Now that would be cool for interior parts.
