I enlisted years ago and went through the whole "fix up a mustang" thing. My advice. Pass on it and buy something that needs no work. You'll spend less $$$ and have a car that works right away. You getting a bonus?

You're not gonna get more than 2 weeks leave within your first year or two.I'm not sure how much work you & your dad need to do on the car,but make sure you can get it done within that two week window,if the cars going with you to your first base.I was a nuclear missile tech myself back in the 90's so I know a little bit about how the military works.
Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine & 5.0 Mustang are basically the two magazines you can choose from.Kroger is a good place to get them, with Walmart being a maybe.Other places to check if you wanna skip the magazine route are::

http://latemodelrestoration.com
http://nationalpartsdepot.com
http://mustangsunlimited.com
http://mustangpartspecialties.com
http://steeda.com
http://uprproducts.com
http://summitracing.com

All of the above companies are listed in the two magazines I mentioned.National Parts Depot & Late Model Resto are the best two companies for restoration, factory installed and hard to find/small parts

USAF is 30 days per year... But you really cant take any until tech school is over unless there are special circumstances. I was car poor as an E3 and I would recommend to anyone to buy a $2-3k beater at first and then build credit for a few years until you move out of the dorms. An E4 with a roomate or two can easily afford a pretty nice car and you get that at the 2.5-3 year mark.

Im going in as a reservist at the moment. I may go active once a position for Intel becomes available, but probably not even then. The mustang runs and could be a daily driver if i wanted, i just want to restore basically.

And no bonus unfortunately. I was 2 points away on my DLAB from a bonus. But i guess an 84 asvab score means nothing when you're going in as an amphibious vehicle mechanic. Haha

Aircrew with the USAF man, best military job there is IMO. Not to mention all the places you'll see and all the extra money you make and the tax free you get.

One last thing... take ANYTHING your recruiter says with a grain of salt and do your own due diligence. Their main goal is to make numbers at the end of the day. If you want to be an amphibious vehicle mechanic and that's what you REALLY want then I'm glad you got the job you wanted.

Thank you for your service.
It looks like a phenomenal job that you had. I was going to go in as an aviation mechanic, but there are no reserve stations here in Florida. And luckily my recruiter did not promise me the job. I was promised by the liaison at MEPS. I have learned very clearly that they dont care if i make it. Haha. Im under contract as AAV mechanic. I leave for Parris Island the 10 of August.

No, not aviation mechanic, loadmaster. Being maintenance on aircraft is kinda thankless and that is actually the job I have but I got lucky enough to fly for awhile, now I fly a desk and I am looking into cross training into legit aircrew or potentially applying for presidential support.

And you are obligated for nothing till you leave really. You have a lot more pull than you think especially if the recruiter is trying to make a quota and you threaten to walk. I'm not trying to sway you either way... but don't settle. You only get to live this life once and if you aren't 100% happy with how going into the military is going you have other options with the military.

He's most definitely right about those damn recruiters.I enjoyed the job, extra pay & quicker advancement that came with my rate as a nuclear missile tech, but I was on sub's & it got old real quick.I went from E1 to E2 after boot camp graduation, E2 to E3 after 6 weeks of Bert( basic electronics rate training)school,E3 to E4 after 14 weeks of swse(strategic weapons systems electronics)school, got a $2500 bonus after swse graduation then went aboard my first sub & finally I got my dolphins plus advancement to E5 after 1 year aboard my sub. Some rates(fields)advance quicker than others.Another thing that sucked about choosing sub's was you had to initially sign up for 4 years then you had to do a mandatory 2 more years as part of the sub program.Faster advancement was great, but I didnt like the extra two years. The aviation field is something you'll be able to bring with you in the outside world so that's a good choice.Good luck with your journey

Thats crazy.
And unfortunately i didnt get aviation, but the AAVs will still be helpful. Its all hydraulics and huge Cummins motors. If nothing else, ill be a certified Cummins technician. I hope on taking that knowledge, going and getting a mechanical engineering degree, and going from there

Being a Cummins engine tech will help you out tremendously once you come back to the civilian side.I imagine the other brand of diesel engines would have a lot of the same parts,so Cummins shouldn't be the only diesel engine you can work on & that leads to a better job in the future. If you were to stay a Cummins tech when you get out, instead of being an engineer, that job would still pay $20+ dollars an hour.

I never checked into how the reserves works,so I had always assumed you had to sign up for 4 years of active duty 1st, before being eligible for the reserves.I never really knew you could go right into the reserves like you're doing.Did they offer you the G.I. Bill or not??That might only be available to active duty. The pay has definitely went up quite a bit since I left.I believe I was only making $750 every two weeks when I was at a E1 or E2 status. Now I did make better money once I got aboard my sub & we were underway for a 3-6 month run because we got basic pay,sub pay & hazardous duty pay.
Well enough of my yapping, wishing you the best of luck.Youll make some great new friends while you're there too,so that's also a plus.

Things with the reserves are a bit stranger. I have an 8 year contract. Theyre actually pushing for reservists right now because there are so few, especially in the job in which i am going into. In the reserves they can guarantee you a job, where in active the best they can do is guarantee you a job field. The G.I. bill will only cover a fraction of my schooling, but some is for sure better than none. Especially because I will have a civilian job on top of being in the reserves. It is also easier to get some scholarships and grants being in the military. And thank you very much. I'm gonna need it for sure. But i figure if i can go 13 weeks in Parris Island, there's not much i can't do.

For the Cummins cert thing, make damn sure you get the civilian equivalent of your military one does not qualify you to work on them for a regular contractor. I dunno how the reserves is but on active they will pay for one certification related to your career field and that is independent from TA or the GI Bill.
