Happy holidays and a soon be happy boosted new year!!
So im looking at new gears. I need them. 2.73's SUCK.
BUT, i dont want to pay the $500 minimum here to get them installed. Do you guys think it could be DIY? Everything Iv done on the car I have done myself but when it comes to teh gears, if someone here thinks it could be done I will feel comfortable doing them. Iv installed my offroad H, borlas, cai, lights. All with ease except the midpipe which took me a bit but i got it in the end. So do you guys think it could be a nice weekend project? Starting Friday night finishing sunday? I dont have a lift. I have Rhino Ramps.
Getting geared set up so the backlash is right and they don't whine is a bit fussy. I like to do my own basic maintenance too, buy opted to pay a guy with experience to do my gears.
Is the $500 for installation only or does it include any fluids of parts?
I do EVERYTHING myself. The only jobs i have ever had done elsewhere were gear install on our v6, and header install on my 5.0. There's just those jobs i want to be someone else's problem if anything goes wrong lol. This is one of them.
Save up and pay the man. I do everything myself including gears. But gears are very finicky and if this is a dd car. You don't want to be fussing with it you want to know it's done rite. My first attempt back in the day took me three adjustments. Now it's normally gold on first try but even I must admit. These mustangs are very picky to the noise lol. I've done four and only one was golden on the first try.

DIY, have a little self confidence. Everyone should have a shop press anyway, those damn things are INVALUABLE for all sorts of stuff and are not exactly expensive at HF. The other tools are a one time purchase but still far FAR cheaper than paying some dude to overcharge you for a 2-3 hour job... if that.
Lmao at this one, its like saying if you can carve a turkey you can do brain surgery! I do my own brakes but I know I'll f up a gear install!
Its not about having self confidence its about common sense not to waste money on something I might do twice in my life only to have to pay someone to redo my f up!
As Volt says leave it to the EXPERIENCED pros, not worth the headaches!

The hardest part is making sure you have a shim job. Just mark your gears and make sure you have an even wear pattern and you'll be fine. If you do them yourself that's the hardest part. The actual removal/reinstall is easy
What everyone else has said. Pay someone to do the work that will back it up if anything goes wrong. Them backing up their work part is the most important. Otherwise, you'll end up with a car like mine....
For all the stories I've read on this forum alone that have had botched gear installs and had to go back to the shop sometimes multiple times to get it right by the Pro's, which I am certainly not, I'd much rather leave it to them to deal with all the potential headaches.
Like I said for something I might only do once or twice in my life Imo its not worth it.
If it was something I was going into for sure Id give it a shot, its something I'd need anyways, but I'll stick to brakes, headers and other bolt ons.

You could say the same thing about basic stuff as far as people messing it up. On here and other places and just as many stories of having to go back to the "pros" 2 or 3 times because of clunking in the rear when they get their gears done.
I still say follow the wealth of instruction out there, get the tools, learn a life skill and not get taken for a ride.
I'm with Scotty on this. If he wants to learn how to do them. Go for it. They are easy and if you get any noises it's an easy adjustment. I've done four now on these mustang and the last one took me 1hout 45 minutes and it was perfect. Proper tools will cost you 200 or less and it's something you'll be proud of when your done. Most shops by me won't back there work up unless you pay there price for there parts and even then they only fix it when it breaks. So why bother.
Or you can go with an easier and cheaper option. Find a wrecked mustang with the gears you want and buy the rear end. Swapping rear ends in this car can be done in 1 hour tops with proper tools.
So i found a shop that will do them for $625. Gears included and everything. Its a very well known shop Mak Performance here in Miami. Im thinking of doing it this Saturday.
Getting 4.10's on my V6. Gas mileage doesn't bother me to be honest with u an extra 4 bucks a week wont hurt. What do you guys think?? I know some people say the 3's but then they wish they went with the 4's.
I've heard if ur mostly highway miles, go with the 3.73s and if it's just for fun and bebopping around town and track 4.10s. I'll be going y he 3.73 route eventually, since its my dd

Jeepers so much back and forth. All my shops are booked until Feb. Kinda wanted to have these done on Saturday. Anyone know of anywhere here in Miami or anyone that can help me out?
$625 installed is still a rip off. Its not the worst rip off but it's a 2 hour job for a good tech, that is $180-$250 labor tops.
As for what gears to get. 4.10s, don't fear the gear. Its only a few hundred rpm difference on the highway but in the lower starting gears the overall ratio is a much bigger difference.

Im really considering doing it myself. I just dont know where to get the press and any other specialized tool that is needed. I know with the time I could do it.
Another shop told me its a 6 hour job and quoted me $800!
You can get a shop press at Harbor Freight along with the punches and beam torque wrench and any hand tools. I have a 301 piece set of tools from HF that I paid $150 for. Along with that and another $50 worth of wrenches/breaker bar/torque wrenches from that store I've done all sorts of work on Mustangs including 3 transmission installs.
Everything else you can get online or rent from Autozone like the bearing separator and claw puller and bearing press set etc.... You just pay the deposit and you get it back when you return the tools.
The thing with gears... they are not like doing a lot of other maintenance on these cars and that scares people. You need some specific tools and its not something that most ppl do very often or ever. Shops know this and they prey on that fact. I don't really know how else to say it. They will charge out the *** because you can either pay the rip off rates or you can not get it done in their eyes.
Super easy install, and almost no tools needed!!
Should be a cinch lol.
