Ok so today i installed my Aluminum Driveshaft. Let me say this first of all, if you plan to install a Panhard Bar and Torque Arm into your Mustang, DO THE DRIVESHAFT FIRST. Oh my god it was such a pain in the ass to work around. Such a pain in the ass that when i pulled out the stock driveshaft i had no choice but to let my tranny fluid drain out since i couldn't put the other in time (garage is angled a bit so i couldn't get it to face nose down without having zero room to work).
All in all, it definitely felt lighter when i was putting it in. I'm looking forward to setting my car back to its race tune and O/R exhaust on since i literally brought it from the smog place and jacked it straight up and got to work. I have pictures of the install on my phone so i'll put those up after this post.
Anyway, probably a good thing i let the tranny drain out, lets me change the fluid and put the right amount in since i know it was overfilled like all 99-04 manuals.
Plan for tomorrow......... Brake rotors and pads, and then bolting my O/R exhaust and putting my stock midpipe back up in the attic for 2 years.
Just imagine if you had to pay a shop to do all that. Granted they prob have better tools and prob could have done it in half the time but still. You prob saved yourself a few hundred O just on that alone not to mention the rest of the labor. Good job man
For the most part it's year round, just depends on where. I do mine usually at Mather airport in Sacramento, but they generally only have 2 events per year. There are usually a decent amount in Stockton, and some in the Bay Area I believe. It's been hard for them getting locations secured.
After the trans is up then i just have to put together the rest of the car lol. Torque Arm exhaust, starter, shifter, driveshaft.
Also started to take the stock cable out. Only issue is i can't reach way up inside the pedal with the Corvette next to the Mustang so i can't open the door all the way lol. I'll have to pull the Vette out tomorrow to get that done. Would like to be all wrapped up Friday because i have plans to go out that night and probably won't wake well that next morning if you get what i mean lol
Like I said before make damn sure when your clutch is torqued down that you can easily slide the alignment tool in and out of the clutch with zero resistance. Otherwise you will never get that 3650 back in there...
Also if your helper suggests using the bellhousing bolts to force the input shaft to line up and pull the trans into place (popping it into place) don't do it, you can break something. My father kept trying to get me to do it that "old school" way last time we did the trans on the blue car.
Thanks for the tip. Was about to do the clutch right now. If I can get the clutch in myself then all my friend needs to help with again would be putting the trans back in.
I looked back at the pics and it looks dry. Still though, if it can be replaced without removing the new pilot bearing you just put in, maybe it's worth it to replace the rear main now..?
Looks like you only need to have the flywheel and shield off to do the rear main seal. Checkout the video here starting around 16:05. It's a newer Mustang, but I'm sure the rear main replacement is pretty much the same. I'd do it if it was me lol.
At this point i only see the car getting another 10k maybe with the current engine in the car so i am not too worried about the RMS. I just don't have one right now and i need to get this thing back on the road. I'm running out of time.
Putting the transmission back in soon. Once that is in i can basically do the rest myself... Tonight is going to be a very long night. But i will make sure she is back on the road tomorrow!!
Gotta put together the exhaust, torque arm, starter, torque the driveshaft.... Installing new clutch cable, quadrant, and firewall adjuster currently. Probably on the road tomorrow. I also haven't put in all the bell housing bolts, those top 2 will take a while.
