pinging with my chip
Hey all, I have a 2002 v6 mustang. I just installed 3.73 gears and an auburn posi...they work great. I also got a chip from VMP to make up for the gear ratio. Anyway, I have 2 tunes; and 89 octance performance tune and a 92 octane performance tune.

Ok, I've only had it on the 89 octance setting since I've installed the gears. Yesterday, after running my tank to empty on 89 octance fuel I gased up with the premium stuff(92 octane) and away I went. As soon as I got up in the RPM's, I got the dreaded pinging noise (!!!!!!!) Anyway, After a few blocks I stopped my car and switched it back to the 89 octane setting and bing, no more ping! (yay). Anyway, I'm assuming it was pinging because there was a little bit of the 89 octance fuel in the tank when I filled up with 92(even though the tank and almost empty and my low fuel light was on). Anyway, I'm thinking I'll just wait a day or so and let some of the lower octane fuel get burned out and then switch to the 92 octane setting on the chip and see if it still pings. Any input on that?

Also, will it hurt my car any to run 92 octane fuel on the 89 octane chip setting? I don't think so, but I just thought I'd check with you guys.

The timing may be advanced to much. Give it about 20 miles of driving and then switch it to the 92, give it a run and if it still pings send the chip back and have it reburned because it should not be pinging.

Make not the rpm range of where it starts pinging up until whenever your car shifts.

where do you live. If you live in a Reformulated Gas state GOOD LUCK!!!!! It has been experienced by many in these states that the octane rating evidently dont mean much.

You can try something. Go to a Ace hardware store and buy a gallon of Toluene and mix it with a full gallon this will raise you octane about 1.5 points Do not buy Octane 104 that tiny little bottle will only bring your octane up .3 it is a joke.

Toluene is used by professional racers to raise octane

yea reformulated gas sucks... good luck with it.

Local gas quality or a lot of oil in the upper intake can cause some cars to ping. Its fine to put higher octane gas in the car than what the tune is set up for. I would put another full tank of premium in it, install some colder plugs, 22 or 32 motorcrafts, and do something with the PCV system. If that doesn't help or you don't want to go to all that trouble I can reburn the chip for you no charge.
