4.6 to 5.4 Swap

Ok guys and girls. This thread is going to solve hopefully any and all questions to those who have considered this swap, but weren't quite sure what they were getting involved in. I am not a mechanic by any means, but I find myself comfortable with a wrench, and have a very strong urge to learn new things. I have never completed, nor even attempted a motor swap but once i started learning what all was involved and hearing it is actually a lot easier than most people give it credit for, the studying has begun.

My build list will be written below, but my goal is to have not only myself, but anyone who knows answers to someone's question, chime in and help each other out. this project will hopefully consist of the winter months, on a $1,000.00 budget. I am determined that I will be able to pull this off by searching for parts, and bartering to my best advantage.

Barter number 1 - A friend of mine wanted my near mint condition black leather seats, I promise to you all on my car that my offer stood for 3 months, I will trade him my seats for his, and I want the 5.4 sitting in his garage. (no blower... yet ;)) After months of waiting I finally got the call and I am actually picking up the motor tonight. Motor... $0.00 WIN!

Pics up around 7 pm.

What do you think... again like I said I am new to this and plan on reading and asking a lot of people for advice here and there. All i know is this motor was made in 2003, and has a steel crank?

Clean those cylinders and pistons. If you can still see the hash marks in the cylinders, your ok. Borrow a compressor and an air driven rotary drill. Visit pep boys or Orileys for the cleaning pads. Clean the gasket surfaces and piston too. May take awhile, but its a must.

Have the piston caps retaining bolts ever been loosened? Check the torque on all.

do you think you can find a youtube video showing a how to? if not can you find a decent how to write up?

Sadly the most expensive thing would be lts on a 5.4 my brothers girl did the swap from a 3.8 to a 5.4 and while the car is mean its restricted alot cause of the headers. Lts are like 900+ to get some custom made. Other than that i can happily say u will have an arse ton of torque from a 5.4

sam minnick 10-02-2012 05:30 AM

I thought about this swap but wasnt sure if i would really benefit from it

2000steeda029 10-02-2012 03:13 PM

Interested

RepumSN95 10-02-2012 10:34 PM

good luck!! keep us updated

1996mustang 10-03-2012 12:29 PM

From the swap u would benefit torque for sure. Its mostly cost that will kill it due to lts and fitment due to heads sittin wider apart than a 4.6. It is a mean swap that i can attest to due to being in one with a 5.4 in a 03 mustang it deff picks up and goes but the amount of money spent sucked. Specially when droppin the motor in it u run into issues to fit stock 5.4 headers by the firewall near the tranny. But do keep us posted id like to see how u did it and wat gains u got

im looking to swap to 5.4 Na navi or f150 engine can u help with ur know how instructions?

2300turboford 10-29-2012 06:31 PM

I think you can, their both pi heads and 2v so I don't see a problem lol

2300turboford 10-29-2012 07:21 PM

That's what u would do

1996mustang 10-29-2012 11:50 PM

U can put liggtning heads on them as wwll as 3v heads. Na ull be looking at more torque for sure last one was dynoed at 300 and 355 tq but with pateiot cams but still not bad for a swap though fitment will be the biggest issue but overall it would be a nice power house

1996mustang 10-29-2012 11:57 PM

As for the navi motor only surgery would be custom intake mani for it

i was comparing mod motors tq out put n this is what i found...

2-valve engines. 4.6L

1997–2010 Ford F-Series, 248 hp (185 kW) and 294 lb·ft (399 N·m) ratings for 2007 and later model year F-Series:bad:

1999–2004 Ford Mustang, 260 hp (194 kW) and 302 lb·ft (409 N·m) 2V
4-valve engines. 4.6L:good:

2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 305 hp (227 kW) and 320 lb·ft (434 N·m):)
2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 310 hp (231 kW) and 335 lb·ft (454 N·m) [8]:D

2-valve SOHC 5.4 L

1997–2004 Ford F-Series, 2-valve SOHC, 260 hp (194 kW) and 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) ratings for 1999 and later model years :headbang:

4-valve DOHC 5.4 L
1999–2004 Lincoln Navigator, 4-valve DOHC, 300 hp (224 kW) and 355 lb·ft (481 N·m)

id love to go with the 4-valve DOHC 5.4 L? thats mean engine right there....LOL

how ever i think if i went with the 1997–2004 Ford F-Series, 2-valve SOHC, 260 hp and 350 lb·ft ..... that gives me more torque then the Mach 1... n those cars move @$$ with all that torque....

so picture the 2v 5.4 f150 in a 5spd mustang with 3.73 gears???? CAN U SAY BADDDDD @@@@$$$$$$$?LOL

Does any one know where to find the compression ratings for these engines, id like it to be BOOST friendly...LOL :woot:

GOFAST 11-07-2012 12:47 PM

hows the swap going

So how is your swapp going?

GOFAST 11-07-2012 12:59 PM

compression ratios

The compression ratios for most 5.4 2v (truck or vans) is in the 9:1 to 9:5 range. Which is very boost friendly.

Me personally, I like to run in the 10:1 range with my boost applications as this allows for Good streetability and performance when not under boost. Now some may not agree or even argue but i have had much success with 10:1 and 11Lbs of boost with a 4.6 2v and stage 2 cams. and if i kept my foot out of it i could squeeze 20 to 22 mpg on my trips from littlerock to chicago.

GOFAST 11-07-2012 02:07 PM

5.4 New Edge swap

I to am currently doing a 5.4 2v swap (my 3rd one) and i have priced it both ways (4.6 used to 5.4 used and rebuilt as well) besides some small suttle changes, i have just about completed my swap. I did want to touch on few things to clear the air on the swap.

1) cost is minimal if you are in need of a engine swap. I have found both engines in the same price range the only additional cost, comes from the intake manifold. You need to either use adapter plates and a P.I. type intake or use the HPS Hardballer intake. either way you will be out about $700 dollars for the intake setup (i searched for weeks on ebay and craigslist and got adapter plates, Edlebrock intake manifold, OBX fuel rail kit and 78mm BBK throttlebody plenium for $450. so if you search, you can find them cheaper.

2) The swap is a direct swap as far as placment goes. the possible interference comes from the passenger side exhaust manifold. it has a hump that is for no apparent reason (5 minutes to grind off) hell i ground off the driver side to and besides, the stock exhaust manifolds are good up to 400 to 500 HP and shorty headers have not shown any real significant gains over stock. LT's offer a nice jump in HP but for the most part are just to ridiculous in cost. In all three swaps i have done (96 GT, 99GT and current 03 GT) i have not run into any other interference issues. yes it is taller but everything fits. I will discuss modifications in a minute.

3) Additional parts depend on year of orginal car for example, on the 99GT the flywheel was already an 8 Bolt and a direct swap as was everything else.

4) Modifications: There are some small modifications that have to be done in order for everything to work:
1) H-pipe needs to be widened and the passenger side of the h-pipe needs to lengthened an inch right below the O2 sensor. Other wise the pipe will not be in alignment and hit the floor plan. the driver side is fine. It will move it closer to the floor pan but there is still enough room.
2) the Hood needs to be notched to clear the linkage. I am including the link to 5.0 mustang magazine that has done this swap.
the article is great and gives you a decent idea of what is envolved.
http://www.mustang50magazine.com/......p/viewall.html

5) Summary, depending on what you want and how far you want to go, depends on how deep your pockets need to be. In reality, if you want a street driven vehicle then you don't need to spend an arm and a leg to purchase excessive parts. I don't mean to place my friend on blast, but he spent over $15000 on billet crank and rods, forged pistons, 278 cams, sheet metal intake and custom machine work and he drives this thing to work everday and complains about gas mileage. The darn car only dyno'ed 428Hp at the wheels. I achieved the same goal with a stock cranked 5.4, cheap H-beam rods, cheap forged pistons, P&P heads and 270 cams and an edlebrock intake manifold and i get 26MPG (@65MPH).
So bigger isn't always better and most importantly efficiency is whats important.

Love the swap its pretty easy

sam minnick 12-27-2012 07:26 PM

Do you get a big benefit from this swap

I never had either swap dynoed yet.

sam minnick 12-28-2012 08:15 AM
