97 Stang Auto Trans Problem

I pulled my 97 mustang into my driveway and put it in park then went back put it in reverse backed out and now it's stuck in reverse and won't come out it has an auto trans any ideas as to what might be wrong with it? any input would be great thx,Stealth

First, does the shifter still feel like it's clicking into the slots? (like you can feel a 'notch' when you put the car into reverse, then into park, reverse to neutral, etc)

I'm going to guess it's either in the shifter, the trans range sensor, or any combination of the linkages in between..

well after it got stuck in reverse i pulled the trans out but when you pull the shifter cable it feels like it's goin into notches and the trans was perfect until it got stuck in reverse where is the trans range sensor located at ? i don't that much about transmissions but i'm trying to figure out what could be wrong with it any help would be great thx,Stealth

So the car is not stuck in reverse, but the shifter was? I must have misread your first post, I apologize - Not sure what would cause it to get stuck in reverse if it's the shifter- as you shouldn't have to press the shift release to get it from reverse to neutral.. It would make more sense if it got stuck in park..

Hopefully someone else will chime in with some personal experience or better ideas

ok let me make the problem a little more simple to understand

pulled into my driveway put the car in park
got ready to back out put the car in reverse and i backed out
then when i put the car in drive it was still in reverse
put the car in 1st and it was still in reverse
put the car in 2nd and it was still in reverse
put the car in neutral and it was still in reverse
put the car in park and it was still in reverse
so the problem is the trans itself is not changing from reverse to drive,1st,2nd,etc
which is why i'm thinking it's a sensor
it has some sort of sensor where the shifter cable is hooked to the trans it's a black box with a plug on it
and as i've said before the trans was perfect until it would not come out of reverse the shifter worked perfect in it maybe this will help clear things up abit
