Wow... They were a lot heavier back then! I couldn't imagine holding up nearly 600lbs for a sportbike.
Is the "terminal speed" on that the top speed for the bike? Seems rather slow. Mine can hit 189 stock. Not that... I'd ever want to go that fast.

No, the terminal speed is a run from 50 mph for 200 yds, it's a measurement of acceleration at highway speeds. Back then the limit was 55 mph, everywhere.
Yeah, bikes were very heavy back then.

Yes be very careful in deed, I know someone that decided he was gonna just go down the street on his friends hyabusa for a ride, and he hit the throttle to fast and ended waking up in the hospital after he landed in a ditch and almost lost his bottom jaw, andhad to have some major dental work performed for reconstructionof his lower jaw...
he really didnt remember anything more than gettingon the bike turning the keys and then waking up in the hospital!
So if this is your first bike, I would recommend taking a local drivers course for Bikes, you will learn lots of safety techniques,a friend of mine did that when he first got his bike! And was very thankful and said he actually did learn alot from it too...just a thought!

I've been riding dirtbikes for years and have ridden a few cruisers: Suzuki Boulevard and a Kawasaki Vulcan... Neither of them are on the same level as the R1 though. I wear full gear. Hopefully I won't kill myself on it but I gave up worrying about doing that even before I got it. And I'm taking the MSF course next time it's offered.
... Go Mariners!
