Figure this riddle out.

This guy told it to me today at work, bugged the crap out of me..

3 guys go to a hotel for the night and they are charged in total $30. So they each give $10 to make the total, and they go to their room. The cashier downstairs realized he overcharged $5 so he took the $5 and was going to give it to the guys who paid. As he's walking over there, he also realizes that the guys don't realize he overcharged so he pockets $2 bucks of the 5. Then he gets to the guys and gives them each $1.

So each guy now has actually paid $9 each. So, 3 guys times 9 dollars equals $27 bucks. Now the guy pockets $2, where is the missing dollar to make the total $30?

It's a communictrion issue, not a math issue.

you gotta look at it this way.

3 guys put up $10 each.

They got back a dollar each (3 dollars returned), for a total outlay of $9 each. 9 x 3 is $27 ($25 for the room and a $2 gratuity) with the three dollars back being a total of $30.

There isn't a dollar missing... The total after they were overcharged was $25 plus the $3 he gave back to them is $28. Then adding the remaining $2 he kept will be $30.

edit: I was beat... Ponycar got to it first; only answered it differently then i did.

its the 28th dollar your missing, when counting like that you dont think about it, but you already HAVE the 27th dollar... ergo you are missing the 28th, 29th, and the 30th dollar, you already have dollar 1 - 27 so the 27th is NOT missing....

Uh the guy also said that its a play on words through this way

3x9 = 27

instead of then adding 2.. you minus 2 because the guy took those 2 dollars..

making it 25, what they paid for the room.

It's all in the wording, it's like stupid because it purposely throws you off. It's not much of a riddle as much as a pain in the ass child story
