I have read where you can do clean install with the upgrade.
Gizmodo - Windows 7 Pricing: Good News, Mostly - windows 7
"To be clear, the term "upgrade" just means you already own and run a version of Windows on the PC you're upgrading. It's still a complete set of bits that you can clean install and even set up for dual booting. The "full" version is mostly for people who are building their own systems."
If this is the case I'm in.

dunno how i missed this thread... but i built my own system about a year ago and it loved xp... i put vista 64bit on there and it ran fine for a while, than it jsut started eating ram for the fun if it (only 2gig but i don't have money to upgrade) and a buddy told me about the rc release.
right now i can run several more things at once than i could with vista, and run bump top with all that on top of it and still only use about 1/2 my ram, thats including like 4 slideshows for the hell of it. I have had issues with some games, but thats the games fault and them not liking the 64 bit os... i agree with the people that say this is what vista shoulda been, instead of the crap that it is.

According to Microsoft's website with Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional you get both 32 and 64 bit discs.

right now vista x64 > XP i've got a beta windows 7, haven't used it yet.
dual booting right now and I hate it when I have to go back to XP for whatever reason.

I'll always run Linux Mint or Ubuntu on the largest partition and give a little space to whatever Windows OS the puter comes with Vista was very problematic early on. I experimented with different Linux distros and never looked back. Free safe and fast is the way to go.

bringing this one from the dead, though I think its a valid question.
answer in short... peer guardian (it doesn't have a release for vista yet)
and some video games I have don't work great with vista, though most have a work around now,... I've swapped to something else than peerguardian so I only boot into vista now.
not to meantion im running a torrent box of its own now

its just a different looking Vista. Windows 7 is basically Vista SP2, however no matter what they do with Vista itll always be mocked (even though its a perfectly good OS), so they just changed the name to wipe the slate clean, and the reviews are all great. Had they released W7 as Vista SP2 it would have gotten sunk. Kinda like that Mojave experiment.....
I have installed it on a older PC hoping for better performance, no bueno. Its a Dell Dimension 2400, 2.4ghz single core intel, 512mb DDR1 ram, FX5500 (or 5200 i dont remember). Vista Ultimate x86 ran pretty smoothly, even running Aero theme, you could have FF open, WMP playing some songs and downloading torrents with uTorrent and it would still move along pretty strongly.
So far with Windows 7 (RC Build 7100) its more choppy when moving windows around.
Ill be installing it on my cheapo lappy as well (Dell D610) going from Vista Ultimate x86 to W7, see if a newer hardware profile reacts to W7 better.
I see no reason to upgrade my gaming rig to W7 yet, not to mention id like to wait until a x64 build anyways, im running Vista Ultimate Eternity x64 and its lightning quick.

Running Windows 7 64 Ultimate for sometime now. It's about 100x better than Vista. Vista was shit. Windows 7 was what Vista should have been. Microsoft fucked up bad with Vista.
Vista is a pretty Windows ME.

I run Win 7 RTM 64 on two media pc and only had a problem with a video driver I had to update. Just installed in on a HP mini Monday night and it runs very smooth.
I also liked Vista for the most part, like Netflix app in vista, can't wait till they get it in Win 7.
Just installed in on a HP mini Monday night and it runs very smooth. I use it mainly for surfing the web, mail and have Microsoft Street and trips with GPS on it to take with me.

Vista was nothing more than a bloated pretty Windows XP. Why did it take 2+ years after Vista and 8 years after Windows XP to get some innovation? The taskbar in Windows 7 is absolutely amazing. I don't know how much easier its made my life working on a computer 8-10 hours a day.
Control of windows is lots better. Windows 7 is what should have been after Windows XP. Vista was ME. A waste of time.

i ran into my first vista x64 issue today after having it installed for a little over a year.
every fucking version of AutoCAD 2010 that i downloaded, (that features both x64 and x86 support) wont install, saying it can only install on a x86 platform. Same with 2008 x64, says it can only install on x86 platform. yousonofabitch. Probably has to do with my haxor version (Eternity) of vista likely not being easily recognizable.
I might put W7 on this rig afterall since its still x86.
Brent i dont see any difference with the taskbar except its boxier (taller) now, especially the icons. I really like the Eternity theme that came with my version of Vista better. What am i missing here?

You can pin things to the taskbar, move them around. The tray is much neater now. Open multiple tabs in IE8 then minimize it. Hover over IE8 and pick the tab you want to open back up. It's the little things. Windows management has gotten a ton better. Open up multiple folders.
It's the little things that Vista didn't do to make working with your computer much more efficent.

Before I was willing to go through the install I think I'd want to play around with it first. I am really happy with XP though.

i think it actually runs slower than Vista Ultimate did on the same pc.
i was playing Farmville on Facebook (i was challenged by gf saying she could build a better farm than me), and it actually froze on me. no shit. the Farmville screen went white, followed by FF freezing up and going white, followed by me CTRL/ALT/DEL my way out of it which didnt appear for about 20sec after the fact. Never had that with Vista.
Might reformat back to XP though, i found i had a XP SP3 disc laying around.
not to mention, it doesnt even come with INKBALL! what in the holy hell, Inkball is like the best game evar.

im in the same boat. i think the free upgrade still costs like 20 bucks or something... not that im complaining... but id be willing to fork that much over just to get rid of vista.

The free upgrade is from direct from Dell, and it best not cost $20....or else there is going to be a lot of lawsuits about false advertising.
