SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Nestled in a quiet Sacramento neighborhood is a very loud political statement that is testing the very foundation of the right to free speech.

Hanging from a house in Land Park, a soldier's uniform in a noose dangles from a rooftop. The words "your tax dollars at work" are scrolled across the chest.

In a community full of patriotism, this view of the war in Iraq has not gone unnoticed.

"I think it's the ultimate sign of disrespect. We have troops dying for us," Land Park resident Mark Cohen said.

"(I'm) annoyed and disgusted. I think if this is the way someone feels they can find a better way to vent their opinions," Land Park resident Pete Miles said.

The homeowners behind the controversy are Steve and Virginia Pearcy. They released a statement saying, "There will always be people who are offended by political speech, and the most important forum of all ... is one's own residence. The First Amendment is meaningless unless dissent is allowed."

Some neighbors agree.

"Even if you don't agree with it, he has the right to state his opinion. I don't find it offensive at all," Land Park resident Cece Williams said.

The tension in the neighborhood has escalated into more than just a political feud.

The matter has been reported to the police department and to the city attorney. The city council has even heard about it, but says they can't solve the problem.

"Unfortunately or fortunately this is protected speech by the First Amendment ... so there is nothing we can do about it," Sacramento City Councilman Rob Fong said.

You do NOT see this kind of disrespect from conservatives. I don't care what you think of me but you only see this stupid shit from the left side of the world. That is just utter disrespect and it offends me and I am not even in the military. I can only imagine what people who are serving feel when they see someone do something like this.

Fucking idiots. People like that don't deserve the freedom this country provides them.

You can disagree with the war but you do not disrespect the people over there fighting it like that.

It is highly disrespectful to the people losing their lives overseas. If I had to walk outside my house and see that everyday I would be extemely pissed

This is a country full of diversity. There are people of all kinds of social backgrounds and beliefs. Just because someone says or does something that disrespects others or pisses u off, u cannot take a way their freedom of speech. U know how many people u can piss off with your statements about the "left side of the world". but u will continue on stating your opinion regardless of whom you offend. And that is your God given right.

Michael Moore isn't over seas getting shot at by ungrateful ragheads.

They can say what they want it is still disrespectful to the troops. regardless if its their free speech or not.

Anyway I am done arguing in this thread as I am sure someone will get pissy about my left comment above. I don't see how you can compare that to the people that are hanging soldiers from nooses on houses but ok

I am not arguing. I am simply stating a fact. Short of libel,slander, or inciting violence you can say or write whatever bullshit pops up in your head. The Constitution does not say you have the freedom of speech as long as u do not offend other people. Many times I have been offended by others people stating their opinion. There is nothing that can be done about it, getting mad only affects you.

(BTW please do not think I agree with this person.)

Think about it this way:

From a military standpoint, my job is to defend this country, and it's constitutional rights. (not an exacting job desciption, by any means, but bear with me here)

You have to take things like this with a grain of salt. The military in essence defends his right to the freedoms he has and exercises.

From a personal standpoint, though I don't see the need to use such symbolism, in a small way, ths simple fact that this guy is doing this lets me know that my job is being done.
