I went to the local parts store and bought some paint and primer and ended up with a blackout panel on the trunk lid and a pair of black valve covers.

Good deal! I'll probably still just get a panel for my decklid but I like the valve cover idea. The only thing that worries me is chipping. I'm not exactly a paint guru, do you sand them down, primer them and then put on 2 or 3 coats of black?

 looks like you did a nice job painting them. you use clearcoat for the rear panel or just paint?

you just have to clean them real well. get all the dirt and grease off of them. Put 2-3 coats of primer and 2-3 coats of high temp engine paint.

no clear coat. I used Dupli color black trim paint. to get the factory look.

Yes, Primer is just paint that goes on first but it helps keep the exterior paint coat good because it is clean and designed to do so. Kinda like kiltzing a wall. You start with a good base.

Yes it's spray can primer. It's better if you can find a primer with zinc because it fills in the pits better.

Yes, your's are plastic like material. Most of the primers you will find will be fine for both plastic and metal so it shouldn't matter too much. Just read the labels on some of them to make sure. As for the paint, that won't matter because it isn't attaching to the plastic anyhow. It only makes contact with the primer.

Any close up pics of the rear panel. Might try this and was curious where you masked off for the paint lines. I'm just a little timid of sanding and painting on my car. |

That's the only pic I have. I made the top tape line right under the body line. And taped off the emblem. I also removed the trunk lid from the car so I didn't have to tape off the whole back of the car.
