pulled over for tail light tint

He followed me for 2 miles and through 3 turns, to pull me over for tail light tint ... He said it was illegal and that I should "take care of it ASAP". I have the lighter tint, and am having issues finding the specific law.

I've heard two schools of thought/opinion/interpretation of law.
1. Any modification to stock headlights, tail lights side reflectors are illegal.
2. As long as you can see the (must be) red tail lights 500 feet/1000 feet behind the vehicle it is legal.

Anyone feel like helping me find the code? Coralville, Iowa is the city/state. I would really prefer to not have to pull the tint off. I know for a fact I will run across this guy again. He definitely pulled out after me in a hurry, and followed very intently. I'm quite sure he was hoping I would do something else (speed, coast a red stop sign, ect).

In fact, he followed me from the main road, to in front of Hy-Vee, through two parking lot stop signs (that I stopped completely at), and finally pulled me over after I turned back onto the road way. It's worth noting, I didn't drive by Hy-Vee to by-pass him, the road I was on ends, and I could either go left to the main road to turn right later, or I could turn by Hy-Vee and pop out the same place (which is much faster).

Yes sir... Apparently this city doesn't have "sound ordinance" for cars other than it can't be "too loud" (doesn't define "too loud") after 9 pm or before 7 am.

they aren't supposed to just follow you until they find something you do wrong. Some people (myself included) get very uneasy when a cop follows them turn after turn after turn. It's considered harassment for a cop to follow you for extended periods of time. I'm not sure on what that "time limit" is though. I would say 2 miles through a parking lot and through 3 turns would be approaching it.

So, if he has a suspicion and is running your plate, checking your tag, verifying marks or item on the car then he can't follow you for a few miles? I tell you what you post that in here and see what they tell you: Donut Shop

The donut shop is a useless source of information. If you post up a story about a cop going into a preschool, raping every kid in there, shooting every teacher, and then burning it to the ground....they would come back with about 25 reasons as to why the cop was innocent and why all of those events needed to happen. Then, any other non-cop that posted a dissenting opinion would get banned and their post deleted.

So Jimmy, don't bother asking over there.

However, I'm sure there is no real limit as to following. Now, if they are trying to rub your rear bumper with their front for several miles, that is for sure an infraction. But, a cop can follow you around as this is a free country for now...so who's to say they weren't just patrolling?

There's a state that did a study on it, and found that the longer a cop follows you, the more likely you are to drive "out of the ordinary". I have no problems with a cop being a comfortable distance back, but when I said "following me for 2 miles and 3 turns" I mean less than 1 second gap the whole time.

yes, much whiteness. The blacks in town live in 2 or 3 places is all. The Hispanics live in 3 places. The rest of the town is pretty much white.

All window tint on side and rear windows is illegal. Anything other than how a car comes from a factory anyway. Tail lights must be red.

funny, on the side rear windows it's whatever we want, as well as the rear glass. Front side windows are 70%

1. A person shall not drive a motor vehicle equipped with a windshield, sidewings, or side or rear windows which do not permit clear vision.

A person shall not operate on the highway a motor vehicle equipped with a front windshield, a side window to the immediate right or left of the driver, or a side-wing forward of and to the left or right of the driver which is excessively dark or reflective so that it is difficult for a person outside the motor vehicle to see into the motor vehicle through the windshield, window, or sidewing. The department shall adopt rules establishing a minimum measurable standard of transparency which shall apply to violations of this subsection.
3. Every motor vehicle except a motorcycle, or a vehicle included in the provisions of section 321.383 or section 321.115 shall be equipped with a windshield in accordance with section 321.444 .

450.7(1)
Prohibition.
Pursuant to Iowa Code subsection 321.438(2), a person shall not operate on the highway a motor vehicle equipped with a front windshield, a side window to the immediate right or left of the driver (front side window) or a sidewing forward of and to the left or right of the driver (front sidewing) which is excessively dark or reflective.
450.7(2)
Standard of transparency.
“Excessively dark or reflective” means that the windshield, front side window or front sidewing does not meet a minimum standard of transparency of 70 percent light transmittance.
450.7(3)
Dark window exemption.
a.
A person suffering from a severe light-sensitive condition may be exempt from the standard of transparency if the need is documented by a physician. The exemption does not apply to a commercial vehicle.
b.
A passenger or operator of a motor vehicle who for medical reasons requires a front windshield, a front side window or a front sidewing with less than 70 percent but not less than 35 percent light transmittance may obtain Form 432020 to be signed by the person’s physician and carried at all times in the vehicle to which the exemption applies. Form 432020 is available from the office of vehicle services.

“Physician” as used in this rule means a person licensed under Iowa Code chapter 148, 150, 150A, 151 or 154.
This rule is intended to implement Iowa Code section 321.438."
