I am trying to order a cat back system for my 96 gt. If i understand it correctly, the stock exhaust is 2 1/4 inches. I am replacing only from the stock catted H pipe back. All these ad's for cat back systems say 2 1/2" pipes or, 2 1/2 " with 3" tips. I asked them if it bolted up to my Stock catted H pipe and they say yes. Whats up I am ignorant on this one. Is the stock catted H pipe 2 1/2 inches or 2 1/4? Is the 2 1/4 just the muffler area? Help This is what they said: the system is 2 1/2" throught and it will mount right up to your 2 1/2"
stock catted h pipe. if it does not you have other issues. direct fit
stuff here

I think so. I know mine is. I know they were smaller on the five oh's. Btw get the pro-chamber you won't be disapointed. You just have to swap it back when you pass smog. I have had mine on there for almost three years.

If it is 2 1/2, just buy the mufflers you want, it is alot cheaper. By both at the same time. The pro-chamber is around $250 & the mufflers are $75 each. You will notice a big improvement over stock. Sound & performance. Then get some gears for that bad dog. I took off 5 tenths with my 3:73's.

My friends 96 gt with a mac prochamber ( 2.5 inch ) and old school flowmaster cat back sounds really nice, most for your car are 2.5 inches....

Thanks guys, it is just weird that When i purchased the mufflers, the inlet and outlet had to be 2 1/4" they fit fine. But when i started looking at H pipes they all said 2.5. I am afraid to buy a 2.5 and find out that it is just like the exhaust 2.25. I'm sure you know what i mean. If i get the 2.5 H pipe then find out different I will have to replace the exhaust all the way back which I didn't want to do. Thanks again!

I have another option I am looking at which is to cut the bottoms out of the cats and empty them. Then weld the bottom plate back on and be done with it. Ever hear of anyone doing that to save $$$$ ?

I have been thinking of a gear change. I want to keep some gas mileage, whats left , So 3:73 ??? What kind of mileage are you getting Js281GT

Awesome, still get good gas mileage, even better on hills. If you have a 5 speed get 3:73's. If you have an auto get 4:10's.
