What are they? What are their specs? How much can I get a used one for? and How hard will it be to get one under my 64 1/2 (if anyone knows)?

there's a few, but only a few that you can fit under your 289.
-the T-5, in any shape and form will fit the best for the least amount of money(you can pick up a nice used one for 600bucks or so.
or you could opt for a tremic, i haven't found those used, and you'll need a host of other parts to make the swap correctly.
and then there's all the modular 5-speed like the T-45, T-56, and the new tremic trannies in the gts and cobras.
none of those will bolt up to your belhousing or engine.
look on ebay and you can find tons of T-5 trannys for sale at good prices.

aah, i looked quickly and saw the 289 intake..thanks for the catch brent
same deal with the 302.. only the tremic and the t-5 are a match.
what's your goal for the var?? great cruser? weekend warrior??
i ask because if you don't plan on beating the car every weekend then a nicely built t-5 will suit you just fine. you can have one built by bob hanlon for about 1000dollars and it will be more than you'll ever need.
check out hanlonmotorsports.com.
they are fantastic.

well, a hanlon-built t-5 can take TONS of racing abuse, more than a factory tremic, and it will bolt right up..but you'll have to pay for it..
it's worth all the pennies in the world when you know you can launch and shift hard and not have to worry..
just don't powershift! that's the weakness of the T-5, even in a super duty hanlon tranny. the flaw of the design..
