I ran into a guy I went to high school with (yeah, back in the stone ages...) on my way to work. He was driving a 1996 Mustang Cobra (took some research to figure that out). A little more research and I found that they are rated at 300 (or 305, depending on source) horsepower. We did a little light-to-light and I bogged it some (damn traction control) but still ended up showing him the UAH tag. Just wondering if anybody knew what these things ran?
Here's a picture of his car:

Well I know that a stock 5spd gt(96) will run a 14.9 1/4 so i'm figuring around low 14's stock maybe high 13's with a good driver? Also if you didn't know stock 96 gt is rated at 215hp.

The fact is the 96-98 Cobra's can be at 300-310 rwhp with exhaust changes, bolt ons and tuning. or knocking on 400 hp with just a 100 shot nitrous kit

Quickest Stock 96-98 Cobra, 13.08 at 105mph BONE STOCK
We dyno at 255-265rwhp. They dyno at 225-235rwhp
Our cars (coupes) weigh in at 3325ish stock DRY...they go in at 3350ish stock DRY
ONLY advantage they have is a lower powerband so they accelerate slightly harder, however, our top end pull is enough to over come that.
Stock, our cars AVERAGE 13.6-13.8 at 102 with a decent driver

all you have to do is a intake and head swap and add a supercharger on a 96-98 Cobra and you will be able to pounce on a stock 03-04 Cobra

Every time I see a relatively stock 99+ GT and a relatively stock 96-98 Cobra at the track race it never fails the GT always gets out of the hole faster but at about 1/16 of a mile the Cobra starts to pull and has it won in the 1/8 and by the 1/4 is walking the dog on a GT.

You sure? 94-95 cobras with an underrated 240hp were rated at a 14.9 1/4 mile. Im not sure that info's correct.

I got it off one of the mustang sites back in the day. I'm not positive, but didn't they put slightly bigger gears in 96? I know my gt I had would of been in the mid 15's because it was auto. Never took it to the track to find out.

Nope, gear options for GTs were 2.73 with optional 3.08s. Stock for cobra were all 3.08

I think most the auto's got the 3.08. I know my gt had them. Who knows though. I know that the 89-93 5.0's ran 15.5 avg 1/4 mile and the 96-98 are supposed to be slightly faster. I think it was something like 14.9 for the 5spd and 15.5 for the auto. Anyway if a 04 4.0 ranger can run a 14.8 stock with 3.55 gears i'd hope a 96-98 gt would be able to run around that time. The GT has atleast 50+lbs of tq more then the ranger. Both motors are built for topend.
Edit: Something else I thought of. Did they change the manual tranny out in 96 to something other then the t5? if so might of had different gearing in it.

all of the 89-93 foxes maybe a auto vert or my slipping aod gt hatch. But a 5spd LX would be in the 14's. the 96-98 GTs were dogs and even slower then the foxbodies. Only slightly faster then the 99-04 v6's.

a good many have 2.73s some 96 gts had the 3.27 option as well~ its odd how they do it. I can about garentee you that the cobras had the same gears though, probably all 2.73s sadly.

I fail to see the difference. At the track 94-98 stock get owned by fox bodies simply because of the weight. The HP difference is squat between 94-98. With a simple swap of the 99 + heads and intakes on a 96-98 and they actually have more HP than the 99+

Everthing is relative after in any given year the mustang has held its own pretty well with the competition. How many cars were really faster than the GT of the same years. Mustang people arguing about what year was better is in the opinion of the owner and who is being asked.
Quite frankly even though it is not the fastest the 96-98 is in my opinion the best looking Cobra of the modern era. It is the reference of what a Cobra should look like.

Im talkin about a stock mustang here. the 5.0s had 225 hp and 300tq, 4.6s had 215 hp and like 275tq. Those 96-98's were dogs. Now the 99+ head swap thing is pretty sweet, but thats not stock
