weight reduction ?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but i didnt know where else to post this.

Besides a carbon fiber hood, racing seats, and taking out the rear seats, what else can i do to make my car lighter without doing anything too drastic?

What year stang do you have? I know that 99+'s have a composite hood which is VERY light. I would guess about 30lbs. I currently have one sitting in my garage, so I'm not sure how much you would benefit from a CF hood. I have a 'vert and have taken out my rear seat when wiring my awsome sound system, and in a vert the seats are really just foam with minor amounts of frame, so they may weight in at 50lbs, again how much is that going to benefit you? I have been led to believe that the wheels (17") are very heavy (again 10-15lbs per wheel)..

I guess since it adds up it may be worth it, but I'm not convinced.

Ive got a 2001 with 2 12'Audiobahn and a sony 1200 watt amp int the back. i also have 18 inch kronix virus rims

My 95's old hood was way heavier than my cobra rr hood.
get rid of ur spare, and all that hardware for it, and anything u dont need.
YOu can also relocate the battery to transfer the weight.. ect. small stuff like that.
There really isnt much u can do.
unless you gut the interior, ect.

Hmmm, sounds like you want to street race... solution = get more horsepower. The more you try and lose weight in your car the less practical your car will become for actually being a driver. The seats will save you at most 30 lbs, if you have a sound system (subs) youll have to sacrifice and take it out, as much as 100 lbs there. If you are interested in drag racing most aftermarket wheels and stock wheels are pretty heavy. A set of drag rims will save you prob 50 lbs for the rears and likewies up front. An upgraded k-member for the suspension can save you 30 lbs or so. New control arms can overall prob save you about 30 lbs too plus the added bonus of better traction. So its possible to save about 300 lbs and another 30 if you take out your passenger said, but for the cost to performance comparison... you could spend the money on the new parts on various performance upgrades and have a greater affect then reducing weight alone

I can say from experience that driving around in a stripped car sucks :!: A 2000 V-6 wieghs in at about 3000-3100 pounds depending on options. That's not bad. Should you need more weight off try a D&D K-member kit. With the right springs you should enjoy the ride and, and get better 60' times. Other companies do the kits but, D&D I've used and can vouch that it works on the street. That's 60# off your car's nose and a suspenion upgrade too.

is chrome really that heavy? because all it is is just plating over another kind of metal.

If you are really trying to build a race-only car (your probably not, I jsut like dreaming about this) your best bet is to buy a body-in-white (I tihnk CDC sell em for like $2000) and build your own car with only the stuff you need in it.

with my stock rear end and with a full interior my '00 5 spd weighed 3120 w/o driver. i have the lightest optioned car, a manual / coupe with my power seat rack replaced with a manual rack, and a few other things.

a normal auto weighs in at 3200-3300.

I think this is taking racing too far. If your that serious about racing, don't buy a consumer car. Your just disrespecting it, and especially Mustangs, by pulling out all the good looks and style.

Here is my weight reduction for the track on most days:

Rear Seat: Full assembly with cushion and brackets and the black headrest

Passenger seat: Just 4 bolts and its out

15's up front with skinny tires. I run steel 15" spares with cheap general Lee 205's I think they are.

Spare Tire, trunk carpet.

Front SwayBar: Taking off equals more brake dive and body roll in turns.

If you really get the bug ditch the wipers,floormats, antenna.

Every 100lbs= approx. one tenth in he 1/4

I'd say your biggest "weight reduction" mod you can do is to ditch those 18's... they are slowing you down not to mention adding weight unless they are ultralites.

If you want to keep street-car driveablility, then look at lightening drivetrain and suspension components, as stated before. K-member, driveshaft, wheels, LCAs, A-arms....
And more engine power don't hurt, neither.

Really for a streetable ride just go with more power, weight is relative, Power is the law. But I agree with Zach on the track where every 10th helps pull it all out

Ha ha, sad part is I've done it before. What works better is a bucket of any sort, just don't let it fall over, you lose all vision. Actually, i was sitting on a concrete block and made the corner a little fast in my friend's truck when we were redoing the interior in his show truck. Stupid thing fell over and there I was sitting on the floor board of a S10 trying to drive it down the road. Very interesting.
