ok the new donor engine is in. a '99 3.8 w/ 51k miles.
current problems:
- all of the accessories need replacing, and my old ones are no better
- head gasket leak, one of the recalls made in '99 that hasn't been fixed yet in this one, or my old one
future plans:
- 4.2 shortblock from RPM w/ forged internals, something w/ a lil more power and stronger setup
- Steeda sport springs/Tokico blue shocks, need stiffer handling for twisty roads around town
- 17x9, 17x10.5 anthracite bullitt wheels, lookin for a wheel that will fill in the huge rear fender
- Grille delete kit, looks good on a red pony
(and don't move this thread brent , it's not technically v6 tech)

first off, why do you want forged internals for your 4.2? Stock pistons and rods will be more than enough for your setup and are quite strong. I have a rods, pistons and crank set for $400+shiping. Also, if you want to get all that stuff, let me know, I can work you out a good deal. OK?

unless he bumps the boost then the stock internals wont be that great
If it were me i'd go forged just for saftey sake

exactly. the supercharger will go back on when i've replaced all my accessories AND dropped the 4.2 on.
i'm going to do anything i can to strengthen to motor before boosting it again so i don't have a repeat incident.

do 4.2 blocks use 351W rods or 347 rods?
either way you could get a hella good quality rod for cheap

Actually, a 4.2 uses longer rods. Same powdered metal stuff
all the way around as a 96^ 3.8 uses... 6.09" rods. Exactly the same.
I'm going to get a Forged Rod for RDMotorsport, and we will have forged
pistons for sure too. I know what rods to use, just barely longer than the
stockers, forged, and reasonably priced. I can get the proper machining
done in town for Rob. Got a great cheap crank place too, we can get the
stuff out for retail for a great price, this is dirt track central around here
and the shops don't think they are made of gold like Nascar Country but
they are pretty much just a good. Terre Haute used to be the minor leagues
for Indy Car racing, years ago.

Actually Forged or Hardened offer great strength advantages. Forged is spun or CNC'ed out of a single block of metal. Hardened can be cast but is heat teated while injection certain chemicals like Nitriding or carburizing into the oven to make the metal stronger. The only reason cast is not prefered is that in casting or pouring of the part being made voids may form, like a bubble in the metal, and cause failure do to the void causing weakness. Now saying this They can X-ray the part and look for voids. So a quality company selling hardened parts will Xray the parts before they make them available.
Actually Profession Racing has gone to Nitride/Carburizing of certain parts because they are just a durable yet cheaper!!!!
