MY setup:
Front
17x8 with 245/45
Rear
17x10.5 with 275/40 (?)
Hey, shouldnt my rear be the same hieght (45) as my front. I just noticed that. Anyways, i wanted to have ATLEAST 295s on the rear. But the tire place i went to said they wouldnt reccommednt anything wider than 275 in the back. Ive been reading through the forums and it seems you guys n' gals reccomend 305's n such.
I would like my rear tire to be a little thicker and alittle wider, like maybe 295s. what would you members reccomend? Oh, i have falcons on btw

well a 275 on the back are goign to be FAR to narrow for a 10.5 inch rim it will look VERY VERY bad, picture a civic with stretched out skinny little tires. It may even be unsafe... think about it this way. A 275/40/17 on a 10.5 inch rim is the same as running a 205-215mm wide tire on an 8 inch wide rim or worse.
So you have some choices
1) Sell the rear rims and get 17 by 8s out back and run a 245 tire, this will allow you to rotate with out worry.
2) Sell the rear rims and buy a 17 by 9 rims out back and run a 275/40/17 (THE correct rim/tire size) but the difference is not huge.
3) Run the correct size tire for the 17 by 10.5 inch rims which is a 305-315. If you cant afford it then sell the rims... dont run wide rims if your not going to use em. They are expensive... but thats the price you pay I guess...
If you dont rotate the front tires get ready for some horrendus road noise ahead keeping them aligned and inspected every 6k and 3k respectivly definatly will help though, tire pressure is also key to tire wear.

on 10.5 rims, you should have wider than 275 tires...in my opinion. 285 bf goodriches are good as they run wide. 315 nittos are a little narrower, look ok, but 315 nittos look best on 9" rims.
As for the height number. That is just the percent of the width that tells you how much of a side wall you have. So, 40% of a 275 tire is about the same as 35% of a 315 tire...as the tire gets wider, the sidewall number gets smaller. If it didn't, the side wall would get taller and taller.
Go wider in the back. Helps traction some, and looks nice with big fat meats back there. 275s on 10.5 rims will look small and the tire won't reach the edge of the rim.

yea, and as posted above the tire wont be wide enough to protect the rim lip thus you will wind up with curb rash and there goes your pretty rims.... the 245/45/17s on the front arnt even enough to protect yoru 17 by 8s... how many new gts you see running around with curb rash quite a bit.
my 275s on my 9 wide's have saved my butt many many times from curb rash.

i doubt 305s will protect em... i would go 315s to be safe but thats just me. zim has 295s on a 10 wide and it is right on the edge of the rim, so i doubt he is very well protected either.
www.tirerack.com is your friend. see how much they want for yokahoma ave es100s in a 315 or even a 305, those are the tires i have and they are very very nice.
