Ever since i got my 02 mustang they previous owner told me it had a power steering leak and that he had to refill it every 2 weeks. After driving for a while the i found that the steering was hard and it made a whiny noise. So we took it to a mechanic and installed a new rack and pinion and that fixed the leak but the steering is still stiff not as much as before but significantly. after the rack and pinion its recomended to get an alignment will these fix the stiffness and whine? its weird that at high speeds its easier to turn but at complete idle its extremely stiff. what can i do to fix this? a new power steering pump? help. thanks.
Mike.

hmm odd, if its hard to turn I blame the Power steering pump probably (could be the linkage but probably the pump) check its fluid level to be safe, my DD makes noises but with fluid in it, it doesnt make any whine sounds.
If you turn the wheel to a full lock you will hear a whine~ thats just how they are but under normal turns (not sitting still) you should hear nothing. While sitting still a little noise is normal it seems.

Yup, if the steering is hard and whining, chances are its the pump. Unless they really paid absolutly no attention when installing the rack and the toe is WAY out. But you would see that standing in front of the car. None the less, you should def get it aligned after putting in the new rack.

+1 you need an alignment but I wouldn't do it twice if the rack they put in is not pu tin right they may have to mess with it and that will ruin your alignment~

alright thanks bunch i'm gonna look into that. do you know the average prices for p-s pumps? since i dont know much about these kinds of parts i dont wanna over pay.
Also i have another question, does the size of the tire matter when it comes to the whine and stiffness? the tires are bigger than the ones ive seen on other stock mustangs although i have seen thicker tires but width wise.
does that have any affect?

shouldnt really matter if the tires are wider~ it will make more noise I guess but not much more. As far as price I have never priced a PS pump before. I would check around and for an OEM price go here: (they sell 10% above cost for ford parts) Tousley Ford Parts Depot
you can call them, ask for steve~
