GM halts work on rwd cars due in 2008
Automaker to focus on next-generation SUVs
By Jason Stein
Automotive News / March 21, 2005
DETROIT -- In a bid to rush its next-generation large SUVs to market, General Motors is reshuffling its future product lineup.
In an internal memo last week, GM product chief Robert Lutz told employees that "until further notice," the automaker has stopped plans to introduce a new line of rear-wheel drive passenger cars that were scheduled to debut in North America by 2008.
Lutz cited the current business climate as the reason for the stoppage, but said GM was not abandoning all future rear-wheel-drive activities.
After an 80 percent cut in its annual earnings forecast, GM announced last week the future of some product programs were under consideration.
But a change in the rwd program, or Zeta architecture as it is known inside GM, was seen as a critical part of the automaker's immediate future. The architecture was supposed to be the basic underpinning for Buick, Pontiac and Chevrolet vehicles in North America and a variety of cars and sport wagons around the world.
The move allows the automaker to focus on its next generation of sport-utility vehicles, which are expected to arrive in 2006. GM will shift resources to other products in the pipeline, including its large SUVs, one insider says.
But GM's decision puts into question development of the next generation Pontiac GTO sports car, and new entries for Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac. Some of those could be built on a modified architecture that is already being used by the company on the current GTO.
Marc Beckers, a spokesman for GM, told the Detroit News: "While work on particular North American applications of our premium rear-wheel drive midsize vehicle architecture have indeed been stopped, we have begun to study new approaches to efficiently capitalize on future opportunities we see for future midsize rear-wheel drive applications.

Sucks for them. They would of made a lot of money off the new maro. Sure they have the GTO but everyone wants the mustang/camaro match up again.

Honestly the new SUV's they are gonna come out with will probably be some kind of hybrid. For all we know they could be coming out with a hybrid turbo diesel lol

^^^i wouldnt count on it. itll be the same run of the mill 5.7l vortech 5000lb suburban, maybe itll have vtec.
and if they were to bring back the camaro theyd do the same thing to the new ones that killed the fbodies, price them so far out of the market that nobody but extreme enthusiasts and mulletheads(no offense markuzls1 lol, git r done) would even touch them. besides, why buy a camaro when you could get the real deal, the vette, for 10 or something more?

Ford isn't the best at decision making, but GM's been getting worse and worse compared to Fords new products, IMO at least..
if any of this proves true, then GM will be taking a hit... a big one

Actually GM is getting ready to lay off or fire 28,000 managers and salaried types. The fact is GM and Ford are hurting due to gas prices and SUV and truck sales taken a dump. FOr whatever reason Dodge seems to weathering it a bit better.
New Ford trucks are ugly
New GM trucks are ugly
New Dodge trucks are nice
New Nissan trucks are gettiong popular quick
New Honda Truck looks like total ass
New Toyota trucks are OK at best

They are not going under. They are still the largest car company on earth. The automobile industry is a roller coaster ride with peaks and valleys. It is also about changing climates. The fact is the giant behemoths of the last 10 years are slowly going away. There to will be a time in the not to distant future where all the recent installing of V8's in cars will stop. The recent return of Muscle cars and hi-performance will go away just as fast as it came if gas prices stay at current prices or rise and dont back down.

I remember back in the late 90's when getting a Z28/Trans Am was your best power per money available anywhere. You could get so much more bang per buck over the Mustang and others, and that's what made the cars so popular. If GM wants to gain back in the muscle car market, they need to make a realisticly priced RWD V8 sports car and call it done. And the GTNO is not an answer to this problem in any way.

GM loves reclying all their things thats the issue. From platforms to engines their cheaping out. GM sucks anyways. I wouldnt buy crap from them (well a 57 Bel Air but thats when Chevy was great)
Gm just isnt making anything special anymore. THeir styling changing cues are minimial, everything is min. same everything in as many cars as they can (trailblazer/envoy, impala/monte carlo, Silverado/Sonama) its all the same platform and engine

Well you can say the same for Ford using the same fairmont chassis on 79 to 04 mustangs. Some car companies just hide the same old shit under different packaging. But the fact is great cars dont need to change so much. Generic crap cars need to constantly change to attract sales.

yeah but what other models can you say using the same platform, the tempo/topaz is one but thats not made no more.
Personally cant think of any two cars right now from Fords camp that uses the same platform unlike GM who loves to do it in all.
my personal fav is the GTO is the same BS as a grand prix just throw in a LS2 engine and its somehow all better

HAHAHHAHA So you dont realize Ford, Mazda and Lincoln share the same chassis. everyone does it. Hell The toyota Camary shares the same chassis as the Toyota Highlander SUV. All car companies share chassis among car lines
