i have been posting in the introduction thread, just figured id post out here. ive got a 1998 V6 mustang, completely stock. im getting CAI, and maybe some pulleys pretty soon, but ive been thinking about gears, i figured that if their even necessary id go for 4.10. but if its really reccomended that id go for 3.73. so id like to hear from you guys just to get an opinion. so are thay necessary or not?

They definitely are necessary. They will help with launches, acceleration, and better power distribution throughout the powerband.
If you're an auto, 4.10's are the preferred ratio, but you could get 3.73's or 3.90's.
If you're a manual, 3.73's are the preferred ratio, some people use 3.55's.
I've hard that 4.10's in a manual are too tall, but I personally couldn't tell ya.

yea if auto you can go with 4.10s due to the fact that the auto transmission is geared higher so the lower 4.10 gear will even it out vs the 5 speed. You have a low power band, it will peak SUPER fast in your single port so keep that in mind, you will go up very quickly in the rpm range lol. I would probably do 3.73s for dd'ing the car and a shift kit with a tune to firm up the shift pressure. Make sure you do a tlok unit, same effort as putting in gears.
also note with gears you will have to correct your speedo, a speedo gear that goes in the transmission will not get it 100% accurate, you can see if a speed cal will work, it should, it is the best option.

American Muscle has one for $99.99 that works on 94-98 autos. That'll adjust the speedo when doing gear/tire changes.
Speed Calibrator - SpeedCal at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!
I'd consider a tuner by SCT or Diablosport since you have an auto. It'll really firm up your slushbox tranny and add a few ponies and possibly gain some mpgs with a conservative tune.

i was just reading an article on how to instal gears, uhm, would it be better to takee it to the shop and have them do it. because it says to tke of the wheels and brakes, drain the fluid out of the "pumpkin" (but i figured that) and then turning the gears certain ways to get them out. and thanks for the speedcal link btw

Oh yeah, I'd definitely take it to a reliable, trustworthy, reputable professional shop to have the gears installed. Certain tools are needed to set the backlash and pinion crush sleeve. You can't just put the gears/tlok in and go, any shop that says you can, I'd stay away from.
As Spector V stated in a thread before, make sure to get a written warranty covering any issues regarding whining or breaking for a certain amount of miles. If you leave the shop without a warranty and have issues, there's a 110% chance the shop is going to blame it on you - racing or harsh driving habits.

They probably would charge a ton, but it is a Ford dealership. Not saying there's a 100% of everything going correctly, things do happen, but usually they give out warranties on such work. The only thing with dealers is they usually won't install any aftermarket parts that aren't theirs. They don't want the liability of something going wrong after installation of non-ford parts.
You'd have to see if you could order the 7.5inch ford racing gears and tlock from the dealership, then they'd install it. At least that's the policy of the Ford dealership by me.

You need cc plates when installing lowering springs that lower the car more than 1 inch.
They help keep your alignment in check and prevent the tires from cupping or wearing unevenly due to the new spring compression and height.

make a new thread for new questions, it gets you better answers
you cant calicbrate the speedo for pre 99's with a tuner, its gear driven.
gears 200, tlok 200, install 300, speed cal 100 thats about it~
