Can anyone tell me what to look for in an axle back system that will give me the growl that I'm looking for?

Depending on the brand, the mufflers will be chambered. 2 and 3 chambered are most common. Straight thru are loud, but can lose backpressure. 3 and 4 chambered are the most quiet, flowmaster make 2-4 chambered mufflers. The magnaflow magnapack system is loud as all hell, it uses a round tube style resonator. That has a nice growl to it. It really is a personal preference.
I'd check some sound vids online. Your best bet is to try and hear some in person, becuase cameras don't always do justice.

Much appreciated. I've listened to a few, and I agree that it just isn't the same as in person. Have you heard that the Pypes brand is an uneven install on the right pipe?

I haven't heard anything about the axle back systems from pypes. I have heard a couple GT's with them and they sounded pretty good, not sure as far as install issues.
I have heard that some converter back/catback systems from them didn't always fit correctly on the 99-04 v6's, mine including, but nothing about the s197's.

one of the best for the money is ford racing's setup, they are the same as the borla cat back (little round mufflers) and sound pretty good.

I scoped out the video(s) online. That was okay-and actually helped me with the decision. I have previous experience with SLP, Magnaflow,Flowmaster and Bassani. I went with the Borla Stinger axle back. It took a little adjusting. I was getting used to the "quieter" factory mufflers-and had to regroup a little-right after the install. I appreciate them now-and have been asked by other folks-"is that a stock exhaust note-it sounds great"..Which only enhances my appreciation. You will not regret it.
