sub box

i want to put to 12in subs in my car and i cant seem to find a box that will fit into the trunk. is there any where that they have these boxs premade or do i have to go out and get one custom made? oh its a 87 gt ragtop if that helps

Ah, a fellow wisconsinite! Welcome! I could imagine you'd have to get a custom box made. I remember talking to a guy with a 99 v6 who put a 10inch enclosed sub in his trunk. He looked for pre-made boxes and couldn't find any, and I'm guessing the trunk is bigger in the 94-99's than the 87's...but then I don't own an 87. Maybe someone that does can help you more.

Ah I was going to say just put down the seats and slide it in but it's an '87. Audio companies are getting wise and making slim and smaller boxes such as Infinity and Pioneer. Another thing you can do is try and make your own. If you're okay with a table saw or jigsaw and perhaps a router you'll have no problems. You really just need to consider the volume your subs need and keep in mind the size of the trunk and you'll be fine.

How do I find out how much air volume my subs need?

weigh the sub, then fill the cone with peanut butter and weigh it again

take the difference in weight, and mail that to 10 random people within an hour

take the amount of time it took you to mail the 10 letters and divide that by the weight of the peanut butter


or look it up on the internet

if you have the mach system... its gonna be hard to find a box, probably will have to measure and custom make one

If you have it still in the box there will be an info card and/or on the box. You can also usually see on manufacturer's websites. You can also tell me the model number and I'll try and give a look for ya'!

Never seen 12s in an 87 but i did help a guy with a custom box that held 10 8"JL subs with 10 amps built into where the back seat should be. Only problem we had was on the first test it hit so hard it warped the trunk lid about 4 inches.


But to help you out with best posible sound for it( and this might sound strange but) what type of music do you primarily listen too. The reason i ask this is certant size speakers sound better for difrent types of music. 8s for rock country 10s for rock country(some high end 10s can be used for extream bass out put with a good box) 12s Rap metal techno 15s rap anything over a 15 is just showing off you have too much money lol.



Or if your dead set on 12s the recent line of low profile subs are realy nice for tight fits.
