The top comes up just fine, when trying to put it down it needs a little bit of help, this just started to happen. Can the cylinder be low on fluid? And if so wouldn't it have a problem going up aswell?

not sure you can add fluid, but you may can. there is a turn setup for up and down so it works differently. You can replace the motor its rather small and shouldnt cost much. Its also pretty easy to get to.
There is a black rubber plug in the reservoir attached to the motor. The reservoir should be filled with the convertible top in the lowered position and the final level should be approximately 1/4 inch below the bottom of the fill hole. Use Type A transmission fluid is equivalent to today's Dexron III or MERCON...
