What's the trick for making sure that an underdrive pulley is all the way on with a car with an auto tranny? Would an impact be the only way, or is there something I'm not aware of?

The problem we were having is that the crank would turn, as opposed to letting the Tq wrench do the work. They say with a manual you put it in 5th, but I see nothing about an auto.
