Headlight switch on dash

I am trying to get to the back of the headlight switch. I am wanting to power some l.e.d. lights when my headlights are turned on but also use the function to dim them (like when you dim your gauge cluster) how do I take off the knob so I can take the dash piece out that covers the gauge cluster. sorry is its confusing Ill post pics if needed

well its not easy... first make sure you dont scratch the behind area so use a rag or something to protect it... take a nail, and bend it so the last... little bit shy of an inch of it is at a 90 degree angle, now turn the knob to find the slit in it... now you will see a metal bar perpindicular (spelling) to the slot pull out toward the back of the car on this little metal peice with the end of the nail and when you do pull out on the know (this pulls up on the metal peice with the nail to unlock it.. the metal peice sits down in a little notch to hold it on) its not easy but just take your time and you may have to give it a little bit of a pull... just make sure the nail is pulling up that metal peice.

Ill give it a shot.... Is thier any other way to find the power lead to wire the l.e.d.'s from that switch?

if you have the rear defroster on the shifter area you can run it off of that easy enough, but you dont... you can still run it from the rear defroster... just have to get a tester and find the one that dimms when you turn the knob left/right its easy to find though~ thats how I have my a pillar gauges wired up, works great, dont stick it on the all time hot wire though!

This is the connector to the back of the headlight module on the dash. their are 7 wires can anyone tell me off hand which wire is the power lead that dims the gauge cluster?
Blue/ Orange
Tan/ White
Brown
Green/ White
Blue/ White
Red/ Yellow
Grey
Im looking for my tester, have no clue where it is

I can tell you that on mine, when I installed white face gauges, I used the brown wire, it was the parking lights wire for me.
Better test that though.

as a note, I'd suggest that anyone who is taking off their stock headlight knob just throw the damned thing away and get a billet one. I ended up destroying my stocker getting it off to do the guages, and got a steeda billet one for cheap. Tightening one set screw on the billet knob vs. dicking around with the plastic one, I'd take the set screw. Just my suggestion though.
Sounds interesting murph, can wait to see the pics!

I agree 100%
The billet one comes loose every once in a while, but it is so worth it knowing I don't have to spend 30 min dicking around with the gay clip Ford used.

Anyway I dont think I told you guys what I was doing.. I have had my stock CD player still installed for a year and only till now decided to take it out. My buddy got me a $50 piece of carbon fiber for free from his work, I cut it to fit the blank space where the stock player used to be. Then bought two L.E.D. lights and wired them to the headlight knob, placed them behind the carbon fiber so the light comes out of the holes in the carbon fiber. and got a running horse from the grill of my other friend's 98 GT, and placed the horse on the center of the carbon fiber. it turned out really well.
