20% on my truck looks nice. Of course, I have 15% on the rear half of my car (front side tint is illegal in Iowa ) and that 15% looks pretty nice as well. I wouldn't go much lower than that as you have issues seeing when backing up

depends on whats legal in your state
EDIT: this might help
http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/CA/
i can't believe california is more lax on tinting laws than oregon... usually their pretty strict in comparison

Here's mine...I believe it's 15% or so (was on the car when I bought it)
It's illegal here for it to be that dark...but the windows are rarely up when driving.

In Texas: 32% light emmission-from two front windows-`back of the "B" pillar-as dark as you want. At night-20%-behind "B" pillar-is plenty dark-and really it is during the day as well. The ceramic films are best-and they cost more than "dyed" film(s)-but actually perform-at blocking U.V. radiation-up to 52% for the "good stuff". A really good film should do just that. Ask to see credentials/guarantee(s) from the installer. Are his clients satisfied? Good luck. I wouldn't have a car in Texas without tint-too dang H-O-T!

Most states allow the rear window to be limo tint. A lot from the rear passengers on as well.

I have 5% all the way around, and it looks pretty good. Although, I do hate rolling down my driver and passenger side windows to back up at night.

just curious, would mustangs be considered "mps"s? (multipurpose passenger vehicle)
"For purposes of this subsection, a " multipurpose passenger vehicle" is a motor vehicle with motive power that is designed to carry 10 or fewer persons and is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation."
i was wondering is the suspension or such qualified as getting to be used off road such as a track or something :S cause than supposedly i would be able to do whatever i wanted to the rear windows and not have to stick to 35%... i think
Oregon Tint Law this is were the info is coming from...
i think i have 33 or something on my protege and i guess it's dark enough if it was installed right(self installed 35 on 2% glass [i didn't do it]... one cop [been pulled over a lot, no one said anything bout the windows] freaked out on me and told me to remove it... no ticket though)
probably just be easier to do like spector said, just go legal and leave it.

i kind of figured... don't see what the difference is between that and a car, mustang maybe, but a 4 door car? just leave the fronts light and the back dark, same thing...

Mississippi is a prime example...They have auto inspections here, but they are just mechanic shops that make you honk the horn, press your brakes & check turn signals...so, for all intense and purposes, there are no rules about cars as far as noise, smog, etc....HOWEVER!!!! Mississippi is incredibly anal about window tint...It is the most strictly enforced automotive law in mississippi...28% limit all the away around...PERIOD! you have to get an inspection sticker & carry a little blue piece of paper that certifies the legality of your tint...cops carry tint guages here, and if you get caught with illegal tint, its like a $150 fine for the driver, plus I believe its a $1000 fine to the shop that issued the illegal certification paperwork....
How silly is that?

Alabama doesn't require window tint certification OR auto inspections, but our tint laws are something like 32% all the way around a car, and in front of the driver for trucks/SUVs, and anything on the back for trucks/SUVs. I couldn't imagine what would happen if you suddenly had to pass a smog test in Alabama, invest in catalytic converter stock is all I have to say.
I know plenty of people around here that have gotten busted for tint though, usually they have the entire windshield tinted and get busted by the state troopers. Though that might have more to do with the local police not having 2 piece meters (just the ones that slip on over the window when its rolled down) so not being able to test the windshield.

The tint law here isn't that bad. I think it's 20% on the side and rear and 35% on the front.

And this is the exact reason my car does not have an inspection sticker...it expired in December. I'll attempt to play dumb if ever pulled over. The one on the Bronco expired in 07 or so.

I saw an old fox body 4 banger mustang for sale a couple of years ago, had rainbow tint on the rear window...definitely not legal.

If you have illegal tint where i used to live they gave you an order to remove it then you had to go to PD to have it checked. Where i live now they just give you a razor.

Why on earth would you put illegal tint on your car at all?
the answer is because it looks cool and you couldn't care less about visibility
To be fair though, he usually had something like 40% on the windshield which is like the lightest tint you can get, he just liked the "shiny" look it gave the windshield, you could barely tell it was there. Not to mention, you can actually get an exemption to tint your windshield if you have overly sensitive eyes and an optometrists recommendation. (at least you could in the past)
