tick in new motor?

I just put a 99 motor in my '98 convertible, and I have a tick in the oil pan. It sounds like something hitting the crank. I think I used the 98 oil pan on the 99 motor so maybe that is the problem, I really don't want to pull the motor to check itout.

Is that a 4.2 you got? If so, you need to check the oil pickup tube clearance
cuz it will hit the rods if it is not bent outward from the rods. Stop driving it
and chek that out! If you lose oil pressure you can lose the whole motor.
It's an easy fix but you may need a new tube...

a continuous tick that increases/decreases with rpms, or does it do it a little bit then stop or what not?

ah, I think I remember now, Hoof got that new shiny SSM shortblock and went
SPI swap at the same time

Rob had that oil tube problem when he went to a 4.2 in his car...
sounds just like what he had. It could be the tube, even on a
3.8 it could be installed off a bit or get tweaked just enough
to cause a collision with a rod. Plus he said it was an oil pan tick.

I didn't realize that I had a thread going here. I solved my tick problem, the windage tray was bent. It must have either happened in shipping, or when I put the pan on. I talked to Tom Y. and he told me to just toss the windage tray. I had a he!! of a time getting the pan off without pulling the motor. I had to lower the k-member, and then jack the motor up, but it came off. Now I have a little oil coming from the pan, but that is to be expected trying to seal that pan up while laying on a creeper. I did have the wrong oil dipstick tube on, but that was just giving me a false oil level, not affecting the noise.
