Hey, I'm planning on doing gears, a t-lok, and a chip for my 02 V6. Should I take it to a performance shop or dynotune place first to get it checked out to make sure it's all good? Had a guy tell me I should do that just to be safe. I've done all my scheduled maintenance and had the car since it's had 9,000 miles on it. I have about 40k on there now and have had no problems.

If you are going to get a chip, you might as well go and get it tuned while you're at it, then they should be able to set up your chip from there for the best gains.

There are a few things to consider when upgrading a rear end.... You can just upgrade to an 8.8 rear end with 3.73 gears and a tlok unit for 750-800 bucks. This seems like alot but really its not that bad for what you get.
You get a very strong rear end that will last a long time, you wont really have to worry about breaking anything. The only down side is finding one for a 99+ mustang. I know where 94-98 8.8 rear ends are, the only difference is the axles will be a little shorter, 1.5 inches over all. This will make the rear wheels stick in more. Wheel spacers can fix this, some just dont like them, that is your call.
You can find one from a salvage yard, but it wont have 3.73 or 4.10 gears in it. If you want to build the 7.5 inch oem rear end you should buy oem ford gears and tlok from www.gefracing.com (or where ever they are just really good and have good prices).
Dont go with another brand of gears, richmond are known to whine and Im not sure about motive gears, not enough info on them available.
The only difference would be possibly upgrading to a 7.5 auburn differential, this is stronger. If you ever plan to drag race the car at the track go ahead and get one of these, the stock tlok unit from ford's spider gears are very weak and will break before anything else. When you hear of a guy breaking his 7.5 rear end 9 times out of 10 its the spider gears. I personally broke one of mine in half not really doing anything super hard on the car...
So in a recap buy oem ford gears and an auburn differential for the 7.5 rear end if you plan to be aggresive on it, else just get the oem ford tlok unit.
For install you MUST get it professionally done, bad installs will make the gears whine and possibly something can break. When you go to get an install ask about backlash specs, pinion sleeve crush depth, wear pattern, etc if they dont have a clue or give you the run around try look else where. A good install is hard to come by... try to get a warranty that clearly states if the gears whine they will fix it and if they break in XX miles its covered. Some places try to tell you whine is normal and will go away... it wont so dont take that crap.
Install should be 200-300... pay more if its a good place though... much better to pay to much for a good install than to have your stuff break and have to do it all over again.
Gears = 180.00
Tlok = 180.00 Auburn = 50.00 more i belive.
check summit's prices.

If you can get a dynotune for a good price, from a reputable tuner, then it may be worth it, its possible to get a few extra HP over a mailorder chip.
But, on a lightly modified car like yours a mailorder SCT chip or flasher will work fine. You have to weigh the cost vs benefit, 300 for a mailorder chip, or possibly a lot more for a dynotune, anywhere from 400-1200 depending on the shop. You can see that just 1-5 HP may not be worth several hundred bucks extra.

Same thing happened to me...broke mine...because of a crappy shim job by a garage I took mine to. Then I went to ford and they suggested a Jasper reman and the damn thing has been whining ever since ($2500 down the drain) ...If I were you I would invest the 800 for a brand new 8.8" rear, it will be well worth it.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind upgrading to an 8.8 rear....but I have no clue where to find one that will be a direct replacement for a 2002 v6 mustang...any ideas?...with 3.73 gears?

Theres the Rear Assembly itself...the easiest thing to do would be to search for the factory part number online or click where to buy on the top of that page...Dont know if any sponsors sell them

check them out, send them an email asking for an axle out of a gt of your year, I am pretty sure it would fit.

Hey guys.....got a deal. GOt a guy that has a auburn differential and 3.73 gears for a ford 7.5. Both the gears and post were bought brand new and put into a car. Once they put it in the car they found out the car's tranny was bad and they took the gears and posi out. The guy selling it said that they both have less than one hundred miles on them and can guarentee it. I can get them both for about 200 bucks. SHould I trust this??? I usually wouldn't ever think of using ebay for this stuff, but for the price and the mileage(pretty much brand new) I may get them. Any thoughts?

Let the buyer beware...thats all i have to say...if you could see them in person that would be better to check for any defects but i dont know i bought a ford t-lok and gears for less than 300...just make sure you have a mechanic that can put it in unlike me lol

Well yeah, I know what ya mean. I can't inspect them in person, so that blows. I could always ask for more pics, but the auction ends soon. Anyway though, I have a place close to me that specializes in gear and differential installation and rear-end work, so I would have them check it out.

www.gefracing.com order gears and an auburn tlok unit or order and 8.8 if you have a pre 99 the ONLY way to do it, the only thing that should vary would be going to gefracing or summit or etc.

you can get oem brand new gears/tlok for a little over 300 from summit or gefracing.com
I would HIGHLY recomment getting a auburn diff if you are staying with the 7.5... and upgrading to an 8.8 if you have a pre 99

94-98 have 2.73s, 99-04 have 3.27s, neither have a t-lok
the 99+ rear is about 1.5" wider

Well, I won that auction wiht the auburn posi and the 3.73 gears for the 7. 5 rear. They both have less than 100 miles on them and I have ebay buyers coverage, so if there is anyhting shady about them, I'll get my money back.
