I am getting ready to buy upper and lower ported intakes, but as of right now I only have enough money for one, is this an easy install that I could do myself? So if i wanted to i could just buy the lower intake first and install it and then buy the upper 2 weeks later and install it, does it matter? Or should I just save up enough money for both and have them installed proffessionaly or can i do this myself, thanks.

what year car do you have?
If >1999, don't buy the upper. Just buy the lower. The stock split port flows more than enough for the mods you have. If you get ported heads and a new cam, then think about a new upper, but for now, just get the lower.
Install it yourself.
Same applies to pre99s, but the upper is needed more in the single ports, than the split port. On average, you will only see about 5hp on the uppers and 10 or so on a good set of lowers.

You want a upper and lower ported together and matched. I would go with Mik @ RPM or Super Six Motors. I would also say wait till you have the money to do the heads and even the cam. I would also do the swap yourself. It only takes a couple of hours and you will gain a whole lot of experience and confidence when you accomplish it yourself.
Good luck

you can do the intakes yourself but the heads and cam are a little harder to do. you can do them yourself but if your not a mechanic it will take you a good weekend to do it. if you bring it to a shop they can't have it done in a full day. its up to you. if you bring it to a shop make sure they put a garantee on their work, in case something goes wrong.

Do you have a friend or a friend of the family that is a mechanic??? If you do see if they will do it on the side and you help. This will be great experience. Hell if I lived near you I would help you for around $300 to do a complete swap as long as you were there to help. Do you want to come to SC ????

I should start doing head/cam installs and charging...hell I offered whoever would buy my heads/cam that I'd install for free if they're local.

if you take it to a shop they will charge you around 11-12 hours of labor. for me it is going to cost me $800 for around 12 hours of work at $70 an hour. I wanted to find a place around here that would do it for $50-60 but they weren't really reliable places. Mike from RPM installs heads and cams for a flat rate of $600 dollars which is $50 an hour of labor. i wish everyone was like that. try to find a place that will give you a deal or even something for free. with my install i am getting a free oil change cause it has to be replaced when you do it and a tranny and rear differential flush and replaced with royal purple lubricant. that is all for free. just try to get something out of the deal

I agree, but if he just does the lower, then it is wider and the air flows from narrow to wide, thus not creating a bottle neck or increased turbulance. So I think for a 99 with just basic mods, just getting a decent lower ported intake will be best for him out of those.
excluding h/c/i combo of course. plus the lower swap is an hour and a half job and very easy. I did quite a few of those when I was porting intakes.

The upper on my car(97) was really easy to get off except for the fact thtat I didn't label and vac lines and it ook a day or two to get it back together right. But it was winter neways!
The lower may be a bit harder for the dumb-witted folk. If you pick up a Haynes/Chilton manual they have instructions on HOw-to do stuff. I use mine all da time.

rgr = teh man, he taught mik @ rpm how to port. he does endorse rpm's work and quality though, so you'd be in good shape either way
costwise, RGR would probably be cheapest, followed closely by RPM. most expensive would likely be SSM. but they all do good work, from what i've heard

I believe RGR is out of the porting business. He was backlogged and owed a lot of people parts/money and is trying to complete these orders and thats it.(unless he's since changed his mind)

Right now RGR is not doing any new porting. I will suggest the following porters to you
Mik@RPM http://rpm-mustangs.com/cart/home.php I have his Heads, Cam and Lower intake. Has quite a few loyal and happy customers. Quality Product
SSM http://www.supersixmotorsports.com They have been around for a while and have a bunch of loyal customers. Quality Product
There are a few others but I do believe these are the Best in the business Currently. These guys also stand 100% behind their products.
