I have been looking into getting new exhaust for my 'Stang, '09 V6, from the headers back and a new intake. I have a mechanic friend who says that I will need to get a new chip or my 'Stang will be 'throwing random codes'. I am guessing he means to say that me stock brains will not know what to do with the new parts?

O.o...they should. After you do so much you'll have to tune it to get the maximum performance out of it, but I don't think it'l throw random codes.

by "chip", he meant a tuner of some sort. they make handheld tuners such as diablo and SCT. it is possible those Mods can throw codes so he is correct

For just a catback exhaust a modification to the car's computer is not needed. If you remove the cats then it will be needed.
Do not ever buy a "chip" and by "chip" I mean a chip that plugs into the computer and stays there. You want a tuner. This will plug into the port under the drivers floor board and reprogram the computer backing up your stock files.
You also can not just buy a tuner from anyone and be good to go. You need a REAL tune, not the off the shelf one size fits all tune.

I have been skeptical since I have not heard of that before. Since those are bolt on parts I didn't think there would be a problem.
I don't plan on removing the cats but I think I will be getting performance cats. Are performance cats worth the money and time?

Actually, unless specifically designed to not need a reflash, most CAI kits for the 05+ require a reflash with the install to keep from throwing lean codes.
Performance cats are fine, but what's worth it more is an aftermarket H or X pipe, cats or no cats it will be an improvement, axle back exhaust also are supposed to have good results..
One of the best mods you could do would be a rear gear swap.. which would also require a tuner to calibrate your speedometer (3.73s minimum.. I vote 4.10s for the 05+ due to powerband/delivery..) That's if you have a manual.. 4.10s minimum if you've got an auto

Doing all city driving, driving about the same or even a little harder I've GAINED 1-2 MPG by switching to 3.73s

yea true you will gain in the city and lose on the highway.
Back to CAI's and Tunes... I would rather have a tune... that just means that the modification made enough of an actual change that the car needs to be modified to handle it... lol

^^ not sure I understand the question?
some ebay companies market a "chip" (to be a chip it actually has to be a circuit not a resistor though...) but its 100% BS... it just dumbs your computer into thinking the incoming air temp is cold so it adds more fuel. Its the IAT sensor and you can do that yourself with a resistor for Radio Shack for 1 dollar or less. They also say 35+ mpg which is laughable... I dont see how ebay lets them sell that trash.

the question was whats the diffrence between the Jet chip and when you get a tune and they install it with a chip vs a hand held?

its all basically the same~ as far as I know. The reason more today are hand held is its much easier to modify and install to begin with I would think. It all about what is ON the chip or hand held that matters.

I Have a JET Chip and have been happy with it but """now to i need to get a hand held to do my next mod""" the JET for mine was $297 the hand held is $361 so in the long run its better to get the hand held if your going deap into moding also my dealer reset the rear gears but only had 3.73 in there program so check and only certion tire size
