Just bought a 95 GT - the price was right and we knew there were some issues with it. First off the engine is sluggish no zip, no wheel spin. First thought was the plugs/wires, well the plugs were shot so burnt that the gap was twice the size as the spec. Haven't changed the cap/rotor. This did not help at all, but it does run smoother at idle. Second thought it could be the cat converter, but it will get up to "speed" just takes a long time. GT has 130k miles on it. Any thoughts ........
Thanks

is it a auto or 5 speed? in any case, you probably have 2.73 gears if its stock. when my car had stock gears, it couldnt get out of its own way. when you're sitting there in neutral, can you rev it up with no blips or studdering? first things first, get the maintenence up to date. congrats on the 95! i have a special place in the heart for 94-95's

No blips or studdering. It's an automatic though. It revs fine and all maintanence is or appears to be up to date. When you rev the motor it revs up fine but comes down slow - just tired i guess

yea, another thing to check would be a torque converter. ive changed quite a few in the auto 94-95's
thats gonna involve pressure tests and you'll need special equipment to do that.

if its an auto its not going to spin the tires easily as they are quite slow, only 215hp stock. A good tune up and some seafoam ran through the engine/vacume lines/etc will help clean her out.

the factory gears hurt you alot with an automatic.
as far as reving up fast and coming back down slowly, thats the factory programing that does that. I believe its called "dashpot decay rate" and I think the reason ford set it so high is so the IAB never really loses control of the idle.
the computer does alot when you rev hard and then let off.
I'd do a compression check to see where that engine stands at 130K
but I think that gears and some exhaust work will make you pretty happy.

2.73 factory gears to 3.73 will make a massive difference in that car as well.. but with the EXTREMLY low rpm peak that those engines have stock you will run through the rpms pretty quick.

I did this change and it is definately worth it. First gear goes pretty quick but its a great mod to do.

Congrats on the '95 (I too have a soft spot for the 94-95s).
When I got my '94 aode, there were just a few mods done: 3.73 gears, "shorty" headers and a shift kit (oh, and mufflers). If I floored it from a stop, it spun the tires in first and second. The shift kit really tightens up the mushy shifts, the headers breathe way better than the restrictive stock manifold and the gears definitely help deliver some zing. I think that was a good way to start out. Good luck and stick with it--there's a beast in there waiting to be released.
PS: Those are good upgrades imho, but I second the advice to check the health and maintenance of what you've got before tweaking.
