you need to use a good brand like Mothers or Meguiars clary bars. You need to wash the car with dawn detergent first (liquid kind regular dawn) to clean off any protection. Then clay bar the car very good per instructions.
After that wash it good again and you can then go for your wax/protection of choice or you can rubbing compound/wash it again then do the wax stage.

is using the clay bar basically like buffing? It seems like from the ads that it does basically the same stuff.

No, claying a car is nothing like buffing. Claying will take residual wax off the car, and other contaminates that washing will not. It will pull stuff out of the paint like brake dust and other things that embed. Buffing cuts the clear coat, clay baring only removes contaminates.
You should wash your car with dawn first to remove all wax. Then clay the car. Then wash it again with regular soap. Then wax your car.
Zaino Store has clay bars alone. I use theirs as I also use their cleaning products. I believe the site is www.autogeek.com or something like that that will also have clay bars alone. I believe autopia does as well but you'd have to search for their site.

After you clay bar you need to install a layer of sealant wax or protectant wax.
My steps usually include:
1. Wash with Dawn
2. Claybar
3. Polisher Wax (removes even more)
4. Carnuba Wax (protects and shines)
5. Sealant Wax (seals and shines)
A trick for the guys running stock wheels like the 99/01/03/04 Polished 5 spoke wheels is to wash and wax the rims becuase they all have a clear coat on them. Looks good!

I don't think your wheels have the same clearcoating on them as the chrome/polished wheels from Ford. Yours look how their supposed to if you just wipe them down.
