Trunk rattle with subs

I've got 2 10" JL w3s with a 500W alpine amp.. needless to say my trunk rattles like no other.

I put dynamat on all the places of the trunk lid that I could and it helps a whole lot but the trunk still rattles way too much.

Have any of you had this problem and fixed it? Any suggestions?

You're system isn't loud enough if you can still hear it rattling....




On my last coupe I gutted the trunk and laid dynomat on every square inch of metal I could find, including the inside of the rear fenders. The rear bumper is bad about rattling, took some duct tape and attempted to fix that.
I was also having problems with pieces under the car making noise, just went through moving every thing I could move and making it not move or rub anymore.

Then you have to go inside and start fixing things there, inside of your doors will take a day a piece to fix everything.


If you really want it to never rattle again, take the car completely apart, dynomat every surface that is not facing the outside and put rubber washers on each and every nut and bolt used in assembling it back together.

Turn it on loud and get out and make sure it isn't the liscense plate rattling against the trunk if it is put some vehicle tape behind it.

It isn't the license plate.. and the system is plenty loud.
The problem is when I turn em' up and get out of the car the trunk is kind of embarrasing ha

Dynomat isn't about covering the metal, the real trick is to make sure that any air pockets are air tight.

Try and find the exact location of the rattle, if it's very specific then there could be some interior parts or components causing the noise. Speaking of interior make sure that all trim is secured and not rattling as well.

Other then that turn down the amp and/or sub levels.

The rattling is the worst right on the backside of the car right behind the GT emblem.. right where no dynamat can be applied because of the trunk light and all that junk gettin' in the way.

Well over on that side you have the IFS. Try securing it down a little more, or relocating it and see how the rattling sounds.

The best solution is going to be a) turn down your stereo or b) get used to it

I worked in the car stereo business for a while and you will spend countless hours and money trying to fix it and you'll probably still never get rid of it all.

I don't want to get rid of it all really.. it's just the trunk rattles so damn much. I realize it's always going to rattle some.. but this just seems too much.

Inertial Fuel Switch, I was assuming you have a SN95+

You could try padding it up, getting some filling foam or even pointing the subs another way if you could.

Oh no I have an 08.. so I'm still not even sure what you're talking about

The subs won't point another way because they way they're installed they're attached to the back of my trunk.
I think I'm just going to have my trunk dynamatted and see how that works. I'm thinkin' if it gets it to the point where the rattle is smaller, I'll be satisfied.

Oh okay, I think the IFS is still in the same location.

The IFS is a little red button. What happens is if you are ever in an accident the force resets the switch so no fuel is pumped, it's a safety feature. You can't press it, or do anything if it's working fine. If it ever happens to go off, say maybe a really short stop (although probably very unlikely) and there is really no hazard you can press the button in to reset it and allow fuel to flow to the engine again.

You can try dynomatting the entire trunk, or the specific areas that are being affected, it could help. Also look into alternative dynomat instead of just Dynomat. I know that some guys use, don't hold me to the exact product, but something along the lines of roofing tar. I'll see if I can find any other info on it.

My friend was tellin' me I just needed better dynamat. I just have the stuff they sell in best buy. Is there better dynamat and will it make a difference?

I stuffed some cotton into the crevices of my trunk lid. Probably not a good idea but it helped.

All branded Dynomat is the same. Some people will argue that Dynomat is much better than "homemade" Dynomat or other name brands, but I think if you just apply the same concepts it could work even better. I would also remove the interior trim and anything else you could remove to both: get the trunk completely bare and make sure it's none of the trim making the noise

Oh yeah as soon as I can find the time to do this I'm definately going to. I'm headed to Ford because I've gotten to be sorta buds with the salesman who hooked me up so I'm gonna see what he thinks.. he has connections with the audio place that installed my subs.

So I go into Freeman's today (where I got the subs) and I told the guy my situation and everything and he tells me it would be about 500 dollars for the dynamat kit and labor! 500?! This sound right to you guys??

When you consider labor is anywhere from 70-100 bucks an hour, that sounds right to me. However nothing they would do is something you can't do yourself with a little more time and some simple tools.

That's why I suggest alternatives to Dynomat. Especially Dynomat which is actually the company and not the actual product name (analogous to an iPod) you pay a whole lot more and with Chip Foose's name on the packaging; I'm sure he doesn't have a stake in their profits. Albeit the quality of Dynomat may be slightly harder then the industries standard but it also might be because the product is so easily available and not other brand names.

It's not that hard to install either. It's a giant sticker, except you have to form it when you apply it and you WILL cut up your hands. The only tools you need (besides those to remove the trim you're applying it under) is a razor blade. The roller tool helps out alot, especially on flat surfaces, and the back of a screwdriver will also help a great deal.

Ya know the other day I was showin some friends the difference between the sound with and without the trunk shut. I went to shut the trunk but didn't close it hard enough to completely shut it but it made a click sound like the first latch was in.. well it didn't make hardly any noise at all..

I don't know if I'd feel comfortable drivin' around with a semi closed trunk though.
