im thinking about upgrading the rear end of my mustang. I first thought about getting new gears and T-lok. Would buying an 8.8" rear end be smarter/less work or would the gears and T-lok be the smarter decision? Also about how much am i probably going to spend for a new rear end if i go that way? thanks
Colin

That depends on what you are planning on doing with it ,are you going to put on slicks ,drag radials, how much HP are you doing at the rear wheels?
most people could get by on a t-lock and rear girdle .

you cannot install gears yourself.... or the t-lok... the difference comes in that you can do a 8.8" install... you will get t-lok... but same gears, unless you get lucky and find some that are already installed with better gears

If you have a pre 99 mustang buying an 8.8 is definatly smarter and its way cheaper to get installed (you can do this one your self)
www.speedconcepts.net has complete 8.8 rear end (well no axles). You take the axles from your pre 99 and put them in the 8.8 then just swap the brakes and brackets over. Cost will be 725.00 and the rears come with 3.73 gears and tloks. I would not build a 7.5 regardless unless you had no other choice.
Building a 7.5 will run you 600-700 bucks if you do it right with new parts. If you have a 99 up you can still use one of those 8.8s from their site you simply have to get wheel spacers since the rear end will be 1.5 inches shorter over all (.75 inches each side) and you CAN NOT re-use your stock axles so you will have to get a set, they are not super expensive just got to get new ones.

if you have the rear end from speedconcepts you will need wheel spacers to make up the shorter rear end difference on the pre 99 rears they sell, you will need the 28 spline axles that the rer does not come with.

then you would be fine, your rims would stick out .25 more than normal, .75 inches per side is how much shorter the rear is.
