i had my sights set on a chip but after talking with spector v over aim i am kinda leaning towards a programmer instead. i am getting from an sct certified mechanic and they are both gonna cost 400. so its not like i gotta spend more on another.
so its a toss up. 4 program chip or a programmer. which one would you choose.
please list the pros/cons of each one, the advantages and disadvantages. all help is appreciated.

Started with a chip & now have a programmer.
Are you looking at the xcalibrator or xcalibrator-2. the second is awesome, includes a code reader & data logger.

well, the chip is an sct chip. i dont know about the programmer. does sct make a programmer? if so, that'll probably be it.

SCT makes the x-calibrator V1 and V2 flasher aka programmer. Both the SCT chip and SCT flasher hold the same programming, they are just different ways of getting it onto the car. The flasher reprograms the stock computer through the OBD2 port, the chip plugs into the J3 port.
The chip hardware costs a lot less, so I'm suprised hes charing just as much for both, even when you figure install costs.
The flasher is easier to use, and can be updated via email, but the initial cost is higher (at least when going by retail pricing).

well, the guy told me the chip would be 400 after everything (including install) and the programmer would be 400 (theres really no install on a programmer since it just plugs in and reprograms, right?).
so i should go with the x-cal 2 then, since it sounds to be an improved version?
so basically, they are the EXACT same thing, it just uses 2 diff ways to program the car?
what about warranty, i have a 75k mile x-warranty. my car is already past factory warranty (37k miles ). will this void my x-warranty? with this factor included, should i just go with the programmer since i could just reprogram back to stock versus them seeing an aftermarket chip in the car?

They are both the exact same programming, but as mentioned about the x-cal2 adds some features. I would get the x-cal2. Since you're concerned about the warranty I would go with the flasher for that reason as well.

got a couple more questions and then i'm done, i promise
how many programs can the programmer hold?
how much hp/tq is usually gained with this?
what other advantages does reprogramming have on the car versus keeping it stock?

3 modified + 1 stock
10-15BHP and 10-15BTQ on average, improved throttle response, raised rev limiter, removed speed limiter, firmer shifts if you have an auto, improved driveability, there are also some ways that MPG can be increased

There are some cases where my programs are the same, there are some cases where my programs are drastically different. When it comes to the V6s I make some changes to the standard SCT tune.

Can the programmer be easily programed by anyone or does it have to be programed by a professional

The SCT dealer that you buy it from will custom program it for your car.

I thought you had the programer already? if not i'd for sure get it. one thing i find positive about it is that you can get the custom programs emailed to you and not have to send the chip in to be reburned. you can log all sorts of helpful information with it and you should be able to play it back on your comp.
