I was hit today (not my fault), and my car is definitely going to be totaled. I'm leaving for college in less than 3 months, and my parents want me to buy a car that my sister can also use once I leave (I'm getting the money that I put into the car back). They are basically insisting on a small SUV, I was thinking along the lines of a Ford Escape, but I was wondering if anyone had any other better suggestions about an SUV to get, considering we live in NJ and need a good car for the snow.
I have a pic of my car on my phone, which I can put up as soon as i get around to transferring it to my comp.

ford escape only if its 4wd. the 2wd model isn't the greatest...and it'd have to be the 6cyl.
a jeep grand cherokee is a great choice tho. the cherokees....eh not so big on them. heard they have a higher roll-over rate than the grands.

There seems to be an endless choice right now of SUVs, I don't care much for them, but I guess they are good for people in snow country. Honda makes some pretty nice looking small SUVs, and what about a Subaru Outback?

says who? I've worked on fords for 3 years now, we've sold a lot of escapes.. but the most they come in for are oil changes/maintenance...
The only issues I've seen with them is they wear through front brakes by 35-40k miles and they have a few safety recalls out, but that's a given for most cars..
I've only seen one with a blown transmission... haven't had many major problems with others at all..

I have a 5 speed no frills 4x4 1996 explorer sport I could sell you.
Anyhow, I haven't heard anything bad about escapes. They seem to serve their purpose in the north.

Uhaul won't rent trailers to Explorers. Gotta be a reason for that.
I don't like SUV's myself and if you are worried about winter traction an SUV is probably not a good choice, imo. Get something lower to the ground.

I've had a 2001 4 door explorer and this 1996 2 door explorer...never had an issue with either in the winter months. The winters near buffalo, NY are not exactly snow-less and I never had a problem driving 100 miles a day round trip to work. Traction was never an issue for me.
As for the trailer...I rented one for my 2001 explorer...I guess they didn't have that rule that day.
I just don't need an SUV down here in the south. Time to look into something more usefull like a lightning/fox body/03-04 cobra coupe. If I don't sell it, I will trade it in once it is paid off in april or may.

x2, and I will also say wrangler, but that probably wouldn't be too good for a first year driver like your sister. But if it says jeep, I like it (cept for maybe the liberty) You could always go old school and get a Full Size Jeep (Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Cherokee Chief) Parts are cheap as hell since those three are basically the same and stayed the same all 30 years they were made.

Haha yeah I HATE the cops around here...i got pulled over for 37 in a 35...cop asked for license, and I gave it to him. I'm 17, so its just a provisional license meaning i can't drive after 12 and I can't drive more than one other non-family member....he was like "shouldn't there be an adult in the car with you?" I politely reminded him that that is for a permit...great that the cops don't even know the rules.
