Just changed my oil today. I went with motorcraft 5w-20 as per the manual. I wanted to go with mobil 1 synthetic but couldn't find it at 5w-20. Is mobil 1 a better oil to go with, performance wise, or will it not make much difference? Also, how many quarts does the 02 gt take? I know my 5.0 takes 5 quarts, is it the same?

My manual says 5 quarts but I've been told 6 so I think it varies from one model year to another. The motorcraft oil will be just fine. I like it as it's a quality synthetic that doesn't cost an arm and a leg

It changed from 5 quarts to 6 quarts sometime during the 01 model year is what I was told in a similar thread not long ago.

Also if an oil does not say it is synthetic, it isn't, if it does, then it should be, I use Havoline Synthetic 5w-30 , 5w-20 is just a tad thinner.

I use mobile 1, if i was you I would also. Last time it ran me 23 bucks for everything which is cheap for the quality of oil you get. Yea they dont make 5w20 either, so I run 5w30... I think last time I went I did see some 5w20 so there may be hope, they may have started using it.

In a 2 year study I analyzed several major oil brands synthetic and regular and found all synthetics to be a vast improvement over regular oil and the difference between synthetics to be more about price than any real difference in quality. Choosing any name brand synthetic will give good performance if you change it by 7000 miles regular driving and 5000 if you race or run your car hard and use a good filter as in Motorcraft or Fram. Spending money on some super fancy filter is also a waste.
I have used Mobil 1, Havoline Syn and Castrol synthetic and am currently using Castrol. I also use Motorcraft filter and will use Fram

Walmart here runs a special on 5 quarts for 20 bucks, I stock up on those, use the regular fram filters, and change every 5k normally.

I had been changing around 5K, but wouldn't worry even if I ran up to 6K, I used the K&N oil filter which had gone up a couple of dollars last time I changed the GT, shortly before the wreck, if anyone gets my engine they will get a good one, it only had about 50K on it, probably not that and about half of that on synthetic Havoline.

ford brand is semi syth. but I would run full synth from Moble 1, just run any full synth and you will be fine as long as its a name brand.

Yeah, they do make it....but trying to find it is a bitch. I have been running 20 in my car but I am switch to 30. Higher summer temps, and also higher boost temps. Going to go a little thicker with the next change which will be right after Jax.

Actually The whole 5w20 was a mistake on the engineers and text writer with Ford. They screwed the pooch when they put in in text and some oil caps. Finding 5w20 a few years ago was as easy as finding big foot or the Loch Ness monster
