I have a 96 3.8 with 21K original miles. The car hadn't been driven in 9 years.
I have changed the spark plugs and wires but the engine feels like it has no power at all.
it starts right up and sounds pretty good until the automatic transmission is put into drive. the RPMs drop to about 500 and it runs a tad rough. is there anything that I can do to smooth the motor out?
Thanks in advance!

i would change every bit of the fluids in the car, that includes the power steering and brake fluid, rear end fluid, everthing. Thats a start.

LOL, well in 9 years, I'm sure the oils have solidified somewhat and they're acting more like an oily glob than an oily liquid. I would definately do a fluid change on EVERYTHING. Just a tid bit of info, you could end up having to rebuild the top half of your engine. When gaskets get wet and then dry, especially over 9 years, they will usually fail soon. Hopefully you won't run in to this problem.

Gasoline left in a car will evaporate leaving sticky varnish over everything including injectors, fuel lines and fuel filter. What gas was left has lost almost all of its comd
bustion properties and if it had any alcohol in it there will be water in the gas
Brake fluid and power steering fluid absorb water and become very milky and brakes calipers will start to corrode
As said above when seals dry they tend to deteriorate and cause more problems
Oil will seperate and settle in the oil pan creating a possibility of clogging the oil pump.

Basically take it into Jiffy Lube or something and get the works done to it. Make sure they check for Squirrel nests too.

Thanks guys.
This thing was stored in a garage and looks pretty much like the day it was new. The interior still has signs of the plastic that covered the back seat.
I will change all of the fluids and hopefully the gaskets will not let go although I haven't seen any leaks or water in the oil...yet.
Oh well not too bad for 1000.00 I guess.
Thanks again!

5% of the fluid in your power steering and brake fluid will turn to water every year~ so ....
there are many many other reasons why to change your fluid... if you have to ask why then learn a little more about your car.

I don't need to ask why, I understand completely.
I just talked to the guy I bought it from and he said that he kept the fluids changed while it sat. The car was up on blocks so it does not have rust any where. I'm going to change the fluids again, better safe than sorry and maybe some injector cleaner will help smooth it out.
Thanks!
