transmission stuck in 3rd gear need help

Hey guys I havent been on in a while but im back. I have a 88 5.0 with a tremec transmission (I think). Saturday I was getting onto an on-ramp. I was in 2nd gear and gave it some gas it started sliding sideways a little, I let off the gas pushed in the clutch and shifted easy into 3rd let out on the clutch and gave it a little gas in 3rd. I didnt jam the gears or anything I shifted easy. Okay so I got on the interstate and pushed in the clutch to shift to 4th and it wouldnt come out of 3rd. The clutch disengages the transmission but it will not come out of 3rd gear. I had to drive the whole way home in 3rd gear. Does anyone know what this might be or how to fix it?

maybe time for a tranny rebuild? I don't know too much about transmissions, maybe some bad shift forks or something, but I am just guessing.

does it come out of 3rd when the car is turned off? If not sounds like you may need some work

you should be able to get it out of 3rd when the car is off..
if/when you do, see if you can start off normally in any other gear.
I've had it happen when I can't shift INTO any gear at all (broke my TOB in half  ), but to not shift out of gear is odd...

the gear is locked up, I HATE rebuilds.. I would just buy a new one honestly.. Rebuilts 9/10s of the time are a hack and fix job... that you got to take in and out 10 times to get some what right..

Hey guys, no it wont come out when the car is off either. It wont come out period, its in 3rd and stuck. I had to drive the whole way home in 3rd gear takeing off and everything. Were pulling the whole transmission out. We took the shifter and plate off and its not in the shifter its inside the tranny. I've got a guy here in hueytown alabama. His company is shankenstein racing and he is awesome. All he works on is Fords mostly all mustangs, he really knows his stuff. So hopefully he can fix it.

Nice to see you again glory, sorry to hear about the car. Once everything is said and done post how to fix the problem in case anyone else comes here looking for the same answer.

you can get a good rebuild, just be leary and have your warranty wrote up... my friend had to make 5 trips for his t45 rebuild, it never worked right and the guy wouldnt refund his money... nearly two years later and after taking him to court he finally got it back... dont want to see you go though that... no matter what they say GET IT IN WRITING.

Hey guys to update! I got my tranny back from shane and he said that inside my 3-4 synchro the key way snapped off. So, naturally that caused a little bit of a jam up. But he did me right and did an awesome job, me and dad reinstalled the tranny and drove it around the block. It runs awesome. I'm so happy to have her back.

thats cool, and yeah i had that happen to mine also, but it was 5th gear and upon forcing it out of gear (I had to I was on a road trip) 5th gear dropped completely out, that was rebuild number 3!

not so much actually glory, but im thinking of changing that
right now i've got some pretty run of the mill GT-40p's with oversized valves
lackluster E-303
and a typhoon intake (edelbrock RPM) runs pretty good considering the intake matches the cam's range, but the heads fall off around 6K
I think im making around 300 hp or close to it
the secret to the sound is that its got 9.8:1 compression
all the other mods I got, but a good transmission, T-5's are such junk.

T-5s are good trannys, cheap and reliable. If you push em hard they will of course break, but at least trannys for us only cost 900~ brand new. You just need to get a hold of a "good" one instead of rebuilt ones. Look at Bens... he has 130+k or more on his and its still putting along fine.

that happend when mine was a 4 banger just beat the piss out of it it'll pop out but you'll have to skip 3rd gear untill you can change those sincronizers in the trans
