Oil Change Help

I have a 1998 4.6L Stang. I need some help with the oil change and tune up. Does anyone have a post link they can send me to assist and/or some quick FYI's and pointers.

Err drain the oil, new filter and oil and change the plugs and wires. Thats about all thats needed. If you need a write up on those please take your car to be serviced.

a chilton's manual would be useful to you. one of those strap type of oil filter wrenches is a big help with the coolant line that runs next to the filter. I can only turn mine a tiny bit at a time with it till it's loose enough to spin off by hand.

Its not hard, but you need to be shown where things are until you do it a time or two (as with many aspects of life

)

drain plug, if its like my '02 is on the drivers side of the oil pan (from underneath of course) and should be a 16 millimeter bolt. If you can't break it loose at your angle hit it firmly with the palm of your hand a few times (the wrench, not the bolt) until it starts to break loose.. if it fights all the way out you might have to replace the plug as its stripped..

oil filter is at the front of the engine on the same side... will probably need an oil filter wrench to get it off Make SURE that the gasket comes off with the old one double gasket = bad..

putting a new filter on.. lightly oil the gasket on the filter (just put some oil on your finger and run it around the gasket) and then tighten it as much as you can by hand

Then snug up the plug (don't have to overtighten it, but snug it up enough... put in the 5 quarts of oil

at this point I crank the engine over til it catches, shut it off and repeat a few times to start to bring oil pressure up.. 0 oil pressure at 200 RPMS = better than 0 oil pressure at 1500+ rpms.. check to make sure its not leaking..then shut engine off, let it sit for ~30 seconds to a minute and check the oil..

that article is okay but.. your car should have a 16 mmr plug rather than 15.. shouldn't have that much oil weepage and the oil filter would be mounted in a different spot

25 plus years of engine building and have never had a problem with fram. Unless you can provide factual data and actual proof of Fram filters causing problems then all you are doing is passing along myths and false accusations.

Fram is a easy target because they are the largest filter maker in the world and own colse to 50% of the market. Every other filter company wants their buisness.

base level fram's don't have drainback flaps, the filtering surface has been proven to be much smaller than that of other filters.. and I think it has a different kind of bypass valve

I dunno I've seen a few studies, and seen them cut open in class, compared them side by side in person.. I've never touched a fram since..

UMMMMMMM...... thats the first time ive ever heard someone ask how to change oil, if you have to ask you better take it somewhere to be properly serviced if you do it yourself you might end up stripping the bolt, or worse....... what happened to auto shop in high school, dont they still teach it!!

many schools don't have an auto shop...

and there's a first time for everything on your car.. Changing the oil is just the beginning..

Well I was in a few year study cutting them in half and checking the oils for contaminants and all the name brand filters did what they were suppose to. There is no magic filter and you just throw them away every 3000 to 7000 miles depending on whether you use synthetic or regular oil.

But if you dont like Fram by all means dont use them. I sure as hell dont have stock with them or work for them. but the fact is most of the world uses Fram.

I have also used a lot of Fram filters, but not always, lately been using the K&N oil filters with synthetic oils, I figure I need a great filter with running my oil 5-6000 miles between changes. I also used to use Wix, they seem a little hard to find now.

I personally use a motorcraft, but where i work we install frams all day.

I use to use Fram exclusively and really only stopped using them after reading a lot about them being lower quality. I've used motorcraft since and didn't notice any major problems with either. I did like the rubberized end on the frams though.
