When I got out of class today I walked to my car and saw that my rear driver tire was flat. Luckily our school has an automotive department that doesn't charge for labor. I drove on up there and asked one of the instructors if he could patch my tire he asked me if I had "custom" wheels I thought he meant aftermarket big chrome rims. I said no the students got the tire off the wheel and once they tried balancing it the numbers were wrong the instructor came over and said in a very rude way I thought u said they weren't "MAG" wheels. I replied "I"m sorry I thought you said custom wheels". He then glared at me then shook his head and told the student to turn the wheel around so the part that spins the wheel was on the flat inside part of the rim. They had to close the place down but luckily one of the students was kind enough to stay after to help me. He got the patch in the weight on and the rim back on and didn't charge anything.
I'm going to the store right now to get some tire plugs, pliers, and a hand air pump in case this happens again in a not so lucky place. I suggest the same to everyone.

Don't you have spare? I'd rather throw a spare on for a little bit than fill a tire up with a hand pump!

Heck, I didn't even get a spare. I got a 12v air pump and some tire filler, where the spare is supposed to be. I have used AAA for about 10-15 years, so I just call them when something happens and they tow me or fix it. Great peace of mind on road trips.

I keep a 16" stock wheel in the trunk for now. I have 2 extra 17" shelby rims at the house. I just need to get some cheap tires for them and I'll be set.

I have no spare in the 'vette. It's a factory run-flat car, but it's got regular radials on it, now. The run-flats are crazy expensive for it. I can pay for a few tows for the price difference.

I trust a spare WAY more than I trust a plug, well, a full sized spare at least. Maybe it just makes me warm and fuzzy inside, but I always prefer dismounting the tire, patching it internally, and rebalancing. If I were to have to plug a tire on the side of the road, and it held up, I would probably still get it patched to be safe.
If I got two flats, I'd do like Rick and call AAA or a buddy.
Now, I am off to get a tire patched thanks to a sheet metal screw I picked up this weekend.  Damn thread jinxed me!

the factory jack is too tall to fit under the car... not much point in a spare if you don't carry a jack that's able to work.

Your first post was fine, but stop adding "what ifs" to everything to try and make it ring true. What if your phone doesn't work, what if you have two flats, what if you have four flats, what if you bottom out and rub a hole in your oil pan, what if your alternator dies.
There is a wisdom to be found in "always be prepared", just ask the boy scouts, but you have to be reasonable in what you are preparing for. I doubt anyone keeps four spares, an extra oil pan/gasket, five quarts of oil, a spare alternator, and all the tools involved in changing them in their trunk just in case all of these things happen. I've had every one of those problems happen to me at some point in my driving career (except four flats at the same time), but you just can't prepare for everything that could conceivably happen. Sometimes you have to concede defeat and say "wow, I never would have been prepared for this" and use your cell phone or walk to a pay phone. |

You're right because it would be a lot better to ride around on two flats instead of using the spare to replace one, and then just have one flat tire instead. My bad.
And if you frequently get two flats at a time I think something is wrong. Either your tires are not fitted to the rim correctly, the rim is corroding, you have to change your driving habits, or stop running from cops when they deploy those spike strips.
Pick up a +12V Compressor and Fix-A-Flat and keep it in the spare cavity.
If the factory jack is too high because your car is lowered then get a new jack. They make others, and even those portable lightweight aluminum jacks (pointing this out before I get another "what if").
If you want to hear a story about breaking down:
When I first got my license my house had two cars but since my mom doesn't really drive I would drive her car - a 1986 Cadillac Deville. My dad had (or rather still has) a 1997 Chevy Blazer which he used to drive upstate and all over (car currently has 250,000 miles on it and still running). One day on his way home his car breaks down not too far from home off the parkway, he calls home and asks me if I can go pick him up. So I get in the Deville and half way there at a 5-point intersection the car starts to overheat and I completely lose power steering. Ever try and drive a 1986 Cadillac DeVille with no power steering? It's analogous to driving a house.
Pulling a 12 point acute left turn as traffic is constantly speeding by me and honking with no assistance I get it onto the side street and drive down a bit only to pull over to see a river of green fluid starting back at the intersection. "So use your mighty iPhone to call in a copter" you probably assume, well I don't have an iPhone and since this took place a good 5 years or so before it even came out things already seemed kind of grim. "Well call those Apache Commandos from your regular cell phone" you probably just blurted at the screen. Well I don't really know any Goose-es or Mavericks that personally to swoop in and save the day. Oh, and I also didn't have a cell phone at the time. "There was a time with out cell phones". "Yes. There was". So what do I do? I walked up the block to the gas station to use the payphone. And they didn't have one. You know what happens then? I walk down the next block to the next gas station and find a payphone, call my dad and let him know the situation. Finally we walk the mile or so back to his truck and call a tow truck. Ahhh.... You see how that worked out?
Of course if I was prepared for all that it wouldn't happen right? Of course if you figure you do regular maintenance, and checks you can reduce the chances of popping all four tires. Besides those times you are dodging cop cars and PIT Maneuvers.

Just to be a dick and stir the pot some more...
Finally got that screw out of the tire on my truck. The thing was so short it didn't even puncture the tire, just stick in the tread. I'm glad I planned on having it patched instead of blindly attempting to slam a plug into it and damaging the tire.

I have 5 nails last count in the passenger front tire on the Bronco. It has a slight leak (enough to air up every few weeks) but nothing major. Just way too lazy to pull a 33" tire off the rim and check it out lol. Also have a nail in the driver front on the cobra, been daily driving it for a few weeks now with no problems. Since I am an eagle scout I do keep a jack and spare in the cobra and a/c compressor in the Bronco. If I get a flat in the bronco I'm just SOL, only jack I have that will work on it is in the garage.
