Hello everyone
I was wondering if someone could explain a humming noise coming from under neath my car. Sounds like the trans to the rearend area. When I take off from a complete stop the humming starts. The humming never stops in tell I make a complete stop. I had a mechanic check the fluids in the trans, and in the rearend. They said the fluids where all okay. I had the driveshaft greased and had the brakes checked (just in case) all okay. The car drives normal except for that noise. The gears where changed out about 2 years ago from 3.27 to 3.55s. Any information is greatly appreciated.

how long has the noise been going. cuz sometimes if the gears aren't set just right, they will tend to whine a little bit.

That really sounds more like a transmission noise than a gear whine, I would take it to a reputable transmission shop and get it looked at. One thing you can do yourself that might tell you a little: Pull the stick on the transmission, the fluid should be red, if its brown or black, you have major problems, also smell it to see if it smells burnt. One other thing can make a weird humming noise, check the power steering fluid, if its low, could be the problem.

does the pitch of the hum change at different rpms? if it were gear whine then the sound will get a higher pitch as the rpms increase.

does the noise increase/decrease in speed as you speed up/slow down? does it get worse when you go over reasonable bumps.
Is your car lowered? I would assume its the rear end gears whinning, they can be very annoying.... mine did this... I had to have em redone but dont go there until you have checked other stuff.

if it is your gears you should have it checked out because gears should never whine especialy when they were put in 2 years ago. if they do then they were put in wrong but your said it just started so thats probably not the case. it is probabaly your U-joint in your driveshaft. if it is not in line just right it will vibrate and humm...and it only moves when your car is moving so that kind of narrows it down.

Increases as I speed up and decreases as I slow down. Does not get worse when I go over bumps. My car is not lowered.

I would say its the gears, if its a high pitched type whine. There is a TSB on v6s with gear whine in 99-02~ its rather expensive to fix so I would just make sure thats it first, check U joint first since its cheap.
