Stock tire question....

I'm still running stock size tires on my 96 (granted, they've got a mile or two on em....but still have enough tread to last awhile). My problem is, some of these shitty roads around Dothan are rutted as hell (52 east, east side of the circle, etc....the high traffic, yet never resurfaced roads). When I'm on these, I'm all over the damned road! Would wider tires help this prob? More narrow tires on front? Or possibly a suspension prob? Or.....is it one of those things I'll just have to live with, or try to avoid those roads..lol. On the even half-assed maintained roads, I have no probs. Well, other than running to the left when I shift a lil hard....but I think that's just gonna take time to get used to a stick again. haha

If its only happening on those roads, then i wouldnt bother trying to correct it with wider tires. Though wider tires will make the car look better when your swerving side to side
Just avoid the roads if possible. I know how it is, we got some real shitty roads around here too.

my car had a similiar problem, i would be all over the road unless it was smooth, i had it aligned and now i don't have much of a problem, hope that helps

hmm....i guess it'd be worth a shot just to see if it's help. But i'll probably just wait til I put new rubber on it, or a drop-kit...whatever comes first. Like I said, I dont have that prob on ANY of the decent roads.....but the rutted roads....whew.......i couldn't swerve that much if I was drunk as hell

wider tires will follow the road worse than you currently are, its not really going to get any better

Check your tire pressure; if the pressure is low, the tires tend to flex more and follow the ruts in the pavement. My car does the same thing with brand new 18x9 & 18x10 wheels and Nitto 555's up on the north side of the circle at 431 & K-Mart. My pressures are good, and I still track with the ruts in the road. If it ain't the tire pressure, it could be the suspension on your 14-year old 'Stang is beginning to wear out.

Yah that's what I was going to say. Wider tires don't make the ride better. It may seem like the more rubber on the pavement, the more stable the car will be on bad roads, but in actuality the more surface area being covered gives you a bumpier ride...this is when driving normally on bad roads of course...the car does grip better and feel more stable around turns and corners on good roads with the wider tires, plus they look badass

Not to mention I would think from a physics stand point the RWD tires moving the car, with increase surface area, will move the car more. Skinnier tires in the front should also mean less grip on turns therefore a reduced response in adjusting even little turns. So the big tires push you to one side and the small front tires will have a harder time fixing the straight line path.

As mentioned above wider tires will follow the road worse. I've been on roads where you have to literally yank the steering wheel the other direction with 275's on the front.

if your car is lowered you can have more bump steer that causes issues (bumps steer your car for you)
