How much does someone usually charge to do it?

I want to recharge mine too... is it the little aluminum tube with the cap running up to nothing?... and you just get a bottle of freon and put it in there? Can it seriously be that easy?

To properly recharge an R134 systen you should pump it down to evacuate anything in the system, in otehr words put it under vacuum, and then put all fresh R134 in.
Yeah, you can just put a can in it and it'll probably work, but it won;t be working right.

Well,
I would take it to my garage and do the work there. But I have a pump, a scale, the hoses and guages, etc. About $400 worth of crap.
You, OTOH, are hosed. Anywhere you take it will bend you over, do you dry and slap you when done. Then make you pay a crazy price for it too. Assuming no other issues it shouldn't take more than one hour to pump it down leak check it, fill it and make change for your 2 $100.00 bills. I can do the same for less than a $20. In fact when I replaced my heater core that's what it cost me to recharge my AC.
I suggest you call around for a quote, good luck though, most places will want to do a diagnosis, after all you shouldn't of lost your freon to begin with. If you vented it for the engine swap don't tell them, play dumb cause it's a major fine for doing that. Not saying the shop will turn you in, but they could. If you had it legally removed then tell them that, if you still have a receipt.
For anything AC related be prepared to pay, alot.

Well if that's the case, I'm not sure how much you care about your AC, but I personally hate AC and almost never use it. I use it maybe once or twice a year. I would just go to Wally world and but the recharge kit and do it yourself. It may not be the 100% correct way to do it, but it works. I did my AC this way and I don't have any problems.

right, I do the same. Just have it charged the cheap way and it'll be just fine. That's my advise. I would never pay some smuck $200 to charge my AC.

Problem is that doing it the cheap way, IOW not pulling a vacuum on it could possibly allow mositure in the system to react with the freon forming an acid that starts to eat your components. If you think paying someone $200 to simply recharge the system is costly wait till you pay them to replace AC components and then recharge the system. You should also re4ally replace the drier too, but I didn't mention that.
That is why I got my license so I could do it right. Yeah, it cost me some money for the tools, but the first time I have to replace something I pretty much paid for the tools.

Good points.
I'm glad there's someone who knows what to do with this. IF there is ANY moisture or non-condensables in the system, it will eventually go Tango Uniform. As much as components cost, it makes sense to do it right the first time for 200$, rather than do it cheap once and then pay in excess of a thousand $ to get it done right after it really breaks.
(I'm certified too)
