I got a recall notice for my 97. The e brake would just fail and release on it's own. You may want to check if your car falls under the recall.

haha....the "why" to your question brings back old memories. When I was In high school (way back when...lol) I had an 82 toyota celica...blacked-out windows, decent lil thump in the truck (this was way back in the day, when there were ALWAYS audio competitions in panama city), had the 22r engine( nothing hot-rodded....but still pretty damned fast, and could smoke the tires), and a b&m t-handle on the shifter. Anyways, we lived on a dirt road.....so it was always fun to fly up to my driveway at about 60, yank the e-brake, and snatch the wheel. One of my buddies had a s-10 (with the e-brake handle under the dash), i was behind him, and luckily not too close, cause when he hit the e-brake, he forgot to twist and release. hahaha he pulled a couple 360's before i e-braked into the drive way, right by him. ahhh...good times....good times

Hahaha
Dude those 80s celicas were a blast, I can't wait for the FT 86 to come out
Oh, and just a question to the original poster:
Does the EBrake handle feel like it's getting progressively more (and sufficient) pressure as you pull it up? or does it crank all the way up with minimal pressure?
Cable could be stretched, or it could be out of adjustment..

if they were drums i would say drive backwards a little way, but other than that, i would do the recall thingy and see if yours fits into that...

Does the lever every feel like it gives out when you pull it all the way up? My 97 sometimes snaps when I pull it all the way and wont lock into a holding position. If I try 1 or 2 more times it will work fine.
