Is there anything I can do on my end (the laptop, not the router) to get a better signal? I'm borrowing the internet from some friends ( ) internet across the parking lot, and I get it most of the time, but not all. Is there anything I can do to get a better connection?

I read somewhere recently that a guy was charged with illegally accessing a computer network by "borrowing" his neighbors wireless connection.
I believe that is a Felony

they make signal "bouncers" to relay the signal over a longer distance.

Well what if they are my friends and don't care!
I'm not thinking a bouncer in the middle of a parking lot would go over too well, lol.

Direct line of sight with nothing between the units is your best bet short of a relay (bouncer). Either that or a signal amp, which I am not sure would be legal.

I'll take that chance. I drove my ass all the way to FL, near you, and you were not to be seen.

A signal amp is nothing more than a power booster. Back in the CB craze days people used to use amps to bump the small power out of a CB, I think it's like 3 watts max, to several hundred watts or more.
The FCC frowns on that and they do tend to hunt down the more obscene violators.
Your signal tends to get weaker the farther it travels and all recievers need a minimum signal strength to detect your signal over the background clutter. A signal amp boosts your ouput signal to a higher strength so that when the signal gets tot he reciever it is still powerful enough to work.

Does your laptop have integrated wireless, or does it have an add-on card with an antenna?
