I'm going to hopefully start getting things together to start my turbo project about this time next year and wanted to get a few things I'll need in advance...
I have an automatic and I know it's recommended to get the next size gears up over a manual (3.73 for manual, 4.10 for automatic) but I've also heard that if your gear ratio is fairly high, once you turbo or supercharge your car, that you'll run out of gear at top end. I also don't like how bigger gears lower your top speed, so I've been considering just getting 3.55 gears because I want a little bang just from that and I want to plan ahead for the turbo. So, I guess what I'm asking for is everyone's input on what gear size I should get. Also, I plan on about 350 hp, maybe a little less, and wonder if I'll need to get an 8.8 axle for it or if a T-Lock would be good enough.
Additionally, I've seen on ebay and in magazines a "Ring and pinion set" and wonder if this all I would need to do the gear swap,(btw I have a SCT tuner and wonder if that would work to fix the speedo) and if not please tell me what else I'll need. As for the axle I've seen the 2 axle pieces on ebay for pretty cheap and wonder if just those 2 pieces is all I need for that, or if I need anything for the differential or..er..I really have no idea on that!?

Thanks in advace.

If you are going to turbo, go ahead and jump up to the the 8.8 rear and 3.55's in that. The stock one might handle it, but it would be well worth the cost after you look at how much gears and a t-lok are just for the 7.5. When you change the gears, I believe you'll be able to fix the speedo using the SCT tuner. And also, when you look around for an 8.8....just buy one that already has axles on it.

Yes his SCT tuner will make the change for different gears.

Don't you end up running out of gear at topend tho? And I don't like how bigger gears lower top speed ...um...and I've even heard that the stock gears will do just fine...I'm confused..I don't know what to do...WWWAAAHHH!!!!

How built is your car gonna be? If you are just adding a litte bit of power, 4.10's or 3.73's will do you best. There's really no reason to be running over 120 anyway...not like you're gonna top that in the quarter anytime soon. If you're gonna be pushing like 450 or more hp....yes...I would recommend going with a lower gear such as the stocks or something around that.

i have a turbo thunderbird, came factory with 3.55's, and ive had the car up to about 135, plenty of RPMs left, still pulling

go ahead and get some 3.73's in it, you wont run out of gear untill probably 135-140, and most street cars never see those speeds

as for your turbo setup, what size turbo(s) do you plan on running?

You should come down sometime, in in Rogersville/killen alabama which is like 20 min from athens....

I also know some VERY good mechanics in the area if you need any help or a second opinion on labor prices.

As far as gears I would go 3.73 gears, that should be fine. You can buy a 8.8 rear with the gears ready to go, minus axles. The cost has went up, as it was 725... not its more but still worth it. Building a 7.5 is fine but when you turbo it.... it will break soon. I can also help you install it, if im free.. its an easy install really just takes a little time.

Its better to spend the mony on an 8.8 than to rebuild the 7.5 a couple times, and a gear install is pricy and can be done bad (but for local people I know a very good installer that does it for under 200 bucks )

Sweet, I could definately use your help on this. I know Rogersville pretty well, used to live off of Snake road, and I clean a pool out in Elgin. I'll definately need to throw a bunch of questions at you about where to get stuff done and just personal opinion on stuff.

I'm planning on 350rwhp with the turbo, and a final number when all is said at 400rwhp. The set up I want is the race kit w/intercooler at tmaturbo.com

just look at the 00 cobra r..it has 3.55's, 375hp, and tops out at a little over 175mph...so 3.73's would probly be better unless you plan on doing 170 often

It also has a 6 speed tranny which makes a difference.

3.73 will be fine.

You building up the engine or just slapping something on? Cause if your just slapping it on you better plan for a engine rebuild soon, and you better get it dyno tuned
